Neither area helps here. Both sit in the 1.5-2.5 hour band to Kintamani, with Canggu at the shorter end and Nusa Dua at the top of it, and the driver arrives around 01:30 either way. If the Batur sunrise is a headline item rather than a maybe, the base that buys you sleep is Ubud, not one of these two.
Canggu or Nusa Dua: which one should you actually book?
Pick Canggu if you want cafes, beginner surf and evenings you can walk out into, and you accept the traffic that comes with them. Pick Nusa Dua if you want flat reef water, a quiet resort strip and the shortest drives in south Bali. This is not a decision about money, and both areas carry the same tours at the same prices. It is a decision about whether the road is part of your holiday or the thing you spend the week avoiding.
The geography does the rest. Nusa Dua sits at the end of the toll road, which is why the airport run holds 15-30 minutes in any hour. Canggu sits at the end of narrow lanes with no toll and no bypass, and the same trip runs 40-90 minutes depending on the hour you land. Canggu is a place you take part in. Nusa Dua is a place you are hosted in. It is a managed resort strip rather than a neighbourhood — landscaped, quiet after dark, with dinner usually happening inside the complex and very little to walk out to. Nothing surprises you, and for a lot of travellers that is the point. Ask yourself what 19:00 on a Tuesday with no plan should look like. In Canggu you walk out and find something; in Nusa Dua you stay in or order a car.
Can you swim, and what colour is the sand?
This is the widest gap between the two, and it decides more holidays than the cafes do. Canggu is dark volcanic sand with real surf running into it, the same coast as Kuta and Legian. It is a shoreline for surf lessons, low-tide walks and sunsets, not for swimming. How does your base change the day trips?
The tours are identical from both areas. What changes is the hour the driver knocks. Every fast boat to Nusa Penida leaves from Sanur port: 30-45 minutes from Nusa Dua against 60-90 minutes from Canggu, then a 30-45 minute crossing either way. Mount Batur reverses that. Both areas sit in one 1.5-2.5 hour band to Kintamani, but Canggu sits at the shorter end and Nusa Dua at the top — the longest transfer we run. Which base costs you more time in the car?
Canggu, and not only on the big days. Bali's realised average speed off the toll road is around 30-35 km/h, and the Kuta to Canggu strip is where map estimates are most optimistic. Canggu to Ubud is 29 km, a mapping app offers 32 minutes, and the real figure is 1-1.5 hours, up to 2 hours or more at peak, because there is no toll and no bypass on that axis. Ride-hailing covers about 95% of Canggu, and Jalan Pantai Batu Mejan at Echo Beach is a firm no-pickup zone.
Nusa Dua pays for that toll road elsewhere: it stops helping the moment you head north or west. The Ayung rafting put-in is about 60 km and 2-2.5 hours away, and Tanah Lot is 1.5-2 hours each way, which makes a sunset-only run a very long evening. Canggu has the west in front of it, with Tanah Lot at 13 km and 30-50 minutes; from Nusa Dua the short sunset drive is Uluwatu instead, at 20-40 minutes.
Who should book which, and who should book neither?
Canggu suits surfers and people learning to surf, travellers working remotely for part of the trip, and anyone whose evenings matter as much as their days. It is the wrong base for small children who want the water, for anyone with an early flight, and for a short trip stacked with outings, because you pay the extra drive on every single one of them.
