Top picks from this guide
#1
A pre-booked car with a name board
The driver waits with your name on a board whatever hour you clear customs, and the fare was agreed before you flew. Published market rates for Canggu cluster at IDR 250,000-350,000 per standard car including tolls and parking, checked August 2026. It is the only option whose price you already know while you are still in the air.
#2
Grab or Gojek from the app lounge
The cheapest of the honest options. Checked in-app on a May 2026 morning, Canggu came out at Grab IDR 185,000 / Gojek IDR 218,000 per car — the two apps leapfrog each other by destination, so price both rather than trusting a winner. There is no kerbside pickup: you walk to the lounge with your bags.
#3
The official airport taxi counter
You name the destination, pay a fixed zone fare at the desk, and a driver walks you to the car. No meter, no haggling, open 24 hours. Published Canggu figures scatter across IDR 250,000-400,000 and the sources contradict each other badly, so treat the board at the counter as the only binding price.
#4
Blue Bird, picked up one floor up
Blue Bird cannot collect at arrivals, so the standing workaround is to walk up to departures and take one that has just dropped off. Tariff runs about IDR 7,000 flagfall plus IDR 6,500-6,600 per km, checked August 2026. Watch the clock: waiting time bills at roughly IDR 45,000 an hour, which is exactly what a Kerobokan crawl generates.
#5
The "taxi? transport?" offers outside the doors
They start the second the doors open and quote inflated flat fares that have nothing to do with the official counter. Remember the geography: the counter is inside the building before the exit, the app lounge is signposted in the car park, a pre-booked driver stands still holding a board. Anyone walking toward you is none of those three.
#6
Knowing which Canggu you are going to
Canggu is not one address. The lanes into Berawa, Batu Bolong and Pererenan are narrow, one-way in places and genuinely slow, and the final 3 km can take as long as the first 15. Send the driver a map pin rather than a villa name — half the arrival-night delays we see are a driver circling the correct lane.
How far is Canggu from Bali airport, and how long it really takes
Canggu is 18-25 km from Ngurah Rai (DPS) depending on the routing, and the drive takes 40-60 minutes in normal traffic and 75-90 minutes or more at peak. Ngurah Rai is the only airport on Bali, so the closest-airport question has one answer and no runner-up. Drivers pick between three ways north: straight up through Kuta, out onto Sunset Road, or east onto the Bali Mandara toll and then north via Sunset Road — that last variant is quoted at 22 km and 50-75 minutes, longer on the map and sometimes faster on the clock. Only the toll variant touches a toll gate, at IDR 14,000 for a normal car (Category I, set 27 April 2024 and still current in August 2026; pages still printing IDR 13,000 are recycling older data).
A word on the numbers you will see elsewhere. Transfer operators advertise 35-60 minutes for this run. That is a real time — at 02:00. For an afternoon arrival it is optimistic by half an hour, and we would rather you knew that before you booked a 19:00 dinner. The two windows that matter are 07:00-09:00 and 16:00-19:00, and the evening one is far the worse for arrivals, because the Denpasar commute, the sunset traffic and the Kuta-Sunset Road-Kerobokan congestion all land on top of each other. Landing between 15:00 and 19:00, budget the top of every range on this page. Landing after 21:00 or before 07:00, budget the bottom.
- Sunset Road and Kerobokan — the standing chokepoints on every non-toll routing, and the reason the middle of the drive is slower than the start
- The last 3 km into Berawa, Batu Bolong and Pererenan — narrow, partly one-way, and capable of eating as long as the first 15 km
- Rain — it halves the scooters and doubles the demand for cars in the same ten minutes
- Ceremonies — melasti processions, an odalan, a cremation, Galungan on 17 June 2026 or Kuningan on 27 June 2026 can close a road for an hour with no notice and no app warning
- Nyepi, Thursday 19 March 2026 — the airport and the toll road both close for 24 hours from 06:00. No transfer of any kind exists that day, at any price
What the airport to Canggu transfer costs in August 2026
Rupiah first, because that is the number you actually pay, and because almost every dollar figure published for Bali transfers is wrong. The rupiah sat near IDR 17,800 to the dollar in August 2026, while most travel pages still convert at 15,000-16,000 — which quietly inflates their dollar column by 10-18%. All the rupiah figures below were checked in August 2026, except the Grab and Gojek quotes, which carry their own timestamp because they are the only fares in this guide anyone verified in-app on a stated date.
One structural point sits underneath that list. An app quote is not final in the way the other two are: the airport ride category is priced above the equivalent city ride, an exit surcharge is reported on top (around IDR 10,000-12,000, though we have not confirmed it independently), and the whole number can move with demand between the moment you look and the moment you accept. A counter fare and a pre-booked fare are the same number when you pay them as when you agreed them. That is the real difference between the tiers, and it matters more than the gap in rupiah.
- Grab or Gojek: IDR 185,000 / IDR 218,000 per car, checked in-app one May 2026 morning. Both apps quote upfront, and the winner changes by destination — on this route Gojek was the more expensive of the two
- Official taxi counter: roughly IDR 250,000-400,000, a fixed zone fare paid before you board, said to include fuel, parking and tolls. Sources disagree with each other by hundreds of thousands on this route, so the printed board at the counter is the only binding price
- Pre-booked private car: around IDR 250,000-350,000 on published 2026 rate cards for a standard car up to four people, with meet-and-greet, tolls, parking and typically 90 minutes of free waiting
- Blue Bird on the meter: about IDR 7,000 plus IDR 6,500-6,600 per km, from the departures level only — mathematically the cheapest way out for one person travelling light, and the worst option if you land into the evening crawl, because waiting time keeps billing while you sit still
When Grab is the cheaper answer, and when it stops being one
We will say the unhelpful thing first: if you are one or two people with cabin bags, landing at 09:00, going to a hotel on a main road, book a Grab. It is the cheapest real option, the price is locked before you accept, and the difference over a pre-booked car pays for two days of lunches. Our own transfer does not make sense for that trip and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Price both apps — they leapfrog each other by destination. Our Grab and taxi cost guide covers app pricing in more detail, and the airport transfer cost comparison sets Canggu against the other south Bali runs.
Canggu is also the route where the app answer flips fastest, and it flips for four reasons at once: it is long enough that a surge multiplies a big number rather than a small one, it is the corridor where surge is most reliably observed, it ends in lanes that app drivers navigate badly, and it is the arrival everyone does with a full trip's luggage — which makes the walk to the lounge in the car park hurt more here than anywhere. Ride-hailing from DPS is cars only: there is no GrabBike or GoRide pickup at the airport, which strands more solo backpackers than any other single fact on this page. If any of the following is true of your arrival, a fixed price bought in advance is the better buy, and our private airport transfer starts from $15 per car with the Canggu rate quoted flat on WhatsApp before you book, no prepayment.
- Three or more people, or two people with checked bags — you are into a bigger vehicle either way, and the app premium for one closes most of the gap
- A late-evening or overnight landing, when apps surge and driver numbers thin out
- A flight with any real chance of delay — a pre-booked driver tracks the flight and waits; an app booking has to be made from the ground, tired, at whatever the price is by then
- A villa rather than a hotel, especially in Pererenan or the back lanes of Berawa
Landing after dark, and the surge nobody warns you about
Everything at Ngurah Rai runs 24 hours — immigration, baggage, the taxi counter, the roads. What changes overnight is the reliability order, and it inverts. A pre-booked driver is unaffected: the car is there, the price is the price. The official counter is the most dependable walk-up at 03:00, because it is a desk with a board rather than an algorithm with a driver shortage. The apps degrade the most: driver numbers drop significantly after midnight, acceptance can take several refreshes, and when three flights land together between 22:00 and 02:00 ride-hailing can run at two to three times the normal rate.
That asymmetry holds regardless of the details nobody can pin down. A night surcharge of around IDR 50,000 between 18:00 and 06:00 is commonly reported at the counter but not independently confirmed — ask at the desk before you pay. Pre-booked fixed rates, ours included, do not move for the hour. The compensation for a night arrival is real, though: the roads are empty, and a 01:00 run to Canggu genuinely lands at the bottom of that 40-90 minute range instead of the top. If you want the same certainty for the days after, a car and driver for the day runs from $59 per car and removes the negotiation entirely.
The last three kilometres, and getting around once you are in Canggu
The single most useful thing you can do for your own arrival is send the driver a map pin, in advance, on WhatsApp. Canggu is four or five villages sharing one name — Berawa, Batu Bolong, Pererenan, Nelayan, Padang Linjong — connected by lanes built for scooters and now full of cars. A driver who has the destination as a pin arrives; a driver who has it as a villa name circles. The last 3 km can take as long as the first 15, and that is true whoever is driving.
Once you are settled, one local quirk is worth knowing before it catches you out: in parts of Canggu, as in Ubud and the Bukit, local transport cooperatives informally block app drivers from picking up on their turf. Drop-offs are almost always fine — it is the return trip that fails. The signals are printed banners naming Grab and Gojek, a map that shows no cars from where you stand, or a driver messaging you to walk out to the main road. Walking five or ten minutes to a neutral junction and re-booking is the whole workaround. Our guide to the Seminyak run covers the same ground for the neighbouring corridor.
If Canggu is a first stop rather than the whole trip, plan the onward leg the way you planned this one. Fast boat tickets with hotel pickup start from $15, and the pickup end is what makes them work from Canggu, since the harbours are on the other side of the island and the boats leave early. Our Gili from Canggu guide walks through the timings honestly, including which departures are realistic from this side of Bali and which are not.
FAQ
How far is Canggu from Bali airport?
Canggu is 18-25 km from Ngurah Rai airport depending on which route the driver takes. Going via Kuta or Sunset Road is the shorter distance; the indirect variant using the Bali Mandara toll and then Sunset Road is quoted at about 22 km. Distance is the least important number here — the drive time varies far more than the kilometres do.
How long does the transfer from Bali airport to Canggu take?
Budget 40-60 minutes in normal traffic and 75-90 minutes or more at peak. The bad windows are 07:00-09:00 and, much worse for arrivals, 16:00-19:00. Late-night landings run at the bottom of that range. Operators advertising 35-60 minutes are quoting a best case that really only exists overnight, so plan your first evening around 90 minutes if you land in the afternoon.
How much is a taxi from Bali airport to Canggu?
Roughly IDR 250,000-400,000 at the official airport taxi counter, checked August 2026 — published figures for this route disagree sharply, so the printed board at the counter is the only binding price. A pre-booked private car sits around IDR 250,000-350,000 on 2026 rate cards including tolls and parking. Grab and Gojek came in lower, at IDR 185,000 and IDR 218,000 in a May 2026 in-app check.
What is the closest airport to Canggu in Bali?
I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), near Kuta, roughly 18-25 km south of Canggu. It is the only airport on Bali, so there is no alternative to compare it against. Whatever a search result implies, for Canggu the answer is always DPS, and the drive is 40-90 minutes depending on the hour you land.
Can I take a Grab or Gojek from Bali airport to Canggu?
Yes, for cars. Both apps have an official airport presence, but curbside pickup at arrivals is banned — you book in the app, then walk several minutes with your luggage to the signposted Grab or Gojek lounge in the terminal car park, where staff match you to a driver at an assigned bay. Motorbike pickup is not available from the airport at all, so a cheap scooter ride out is not an option.
Is it worth pre-booking an airport transfer to Canggu?
For a solo traveller or couple with hand luggage landing in daylight, no — take a Grab and keep the difference. Pre-booking pays off on this route when you are three or more, have checked bags, land after dark when apps can run at two to three times normal, or your flight might be delayed. Our transfers start from $15 per car, booked on WhatsApp with no prepayment and a price that does not move.
