The Seminyak half is not protected
Seminyak sits 12-15 km from the terminal on the north-west side, on ordinary surface roads with no toll and no bypass. That leg runs 30-50 minutes normally and 45-75 in the rush, because the traffic heading north-west out of the airport funnels through the Kuta corridor and Sunset Road. Almost every minute of variance in this journey belongs to this leg.

Ngurah Rai sits between the two areas, so the drive passes it in either direction. That is worth knowing on the day you fly: moving between Seminyak and Nusa Dua on an arrival or departure day is not an extra journey, it is the airport transfer you were making anyway with the second half attached.

The honest answer is two numbers rather than one. The two areas sit on opposite sides of the airport, so the drive passes it, and each half behaves differently: 15-30 minutes between the airport and Nusa Dua at any hour of the day, and 30-50 minutes between the airport and Seminyak, stretching to 45-75 minutes in the rush. We say plainly that this is a sum. What this guide adds is the part that decides your morning: all of the variance sits in the Seminyak half, and none of it in the Nusa Dua half.
Why does the drive go past the airport?
Because Ngurah Rai is between them. Seminyak sits 12-15 km from the terminal on the north-west side; Nusa Dua sits on the southern side, at the end of the toll road. The road distance between the two areas is 18-22 km, and the spread is real rather than sloppy measurement: Seminyak alone runs about three kilometres along its main street, so which two doors you are travelling between moves the number.
The Bali Mandara toll road is why the southern half is quick. Nusa Dua sits at the end of it, on a toll and bypass corridor built for exactly this run, and the toll costs IDR 14,000 for a normal car, a rate set in April 2024 and still current. What the toll cannot do is help the other half of your journey: it stops at the airport corridor, and the road out to Seminyak is ordinary traffic from there on.
What time of day should you leave?
Outside 07:00-09:00 and 16:00-19:00 if you have any choice. Those are the two windows that do the damage in south Bali, and the evening one is worse, because the Denpasar commute, the sunset rush onto the Bukit and ordinary Kuta and Kerobokan congestion all land at once. Late at night this is a different road. At 02:00 there is nothing on it and the airport-to-Seminyak leg is a genuine 20 minutes. The Nusa Dua half barely moves in either direction, which is the whole point of the toll road, so a night-time departure improves one half of your journey and leaves the other exactly as it was.
What does the trip cost?
A ride-hailing car between the two areas is priced at IDR 160,000-200,000 in one worked example, plus about IDR 14,000 of toll if the driver takes it. App prices move with demand rather than sitting still: surge is reliable on Friday and Saturday nights between 21:00 and 01:00 in the Canggu-Seminyak corridor, and instantly in heavy rain. The trade-offs between apps and a booked car are in Grab, Gojek or a private driver.
If you are flying the same day, the sensible booking is not a transfer between the areas at all. An airport transfer is from $15 per car, fixed, with no prepayment and the driver waiting however late the plane lands. If the day has stops in it, a car and driver from $59 per car covers the whole vehicle for the day, so two people and four pay the same figure.
Are you moving hotels, or going for the day?
If you are changing base mid-trip, move in the middle of the day. Ordinary checkout hours put you on the road between the two rush windows, which is when this drive is at its most predictable. Put the luggage in the car rather than moving it through an app pickup point, and book the trip as one journey rather than two, because the second half of it is the easy half.
If you are going over for the day and coming back, plan the return leg first. The outbound run in the morning is usually fine; the leg back to Seminyak between 16:00-19:00 is the one that turns a short drive into a long one. Either leave the beach early, or accept a late dinner and let the road empty out first. This is the single most common way this journey goes wrong.
Does the move change your day trips?
Barely, and this surprises people. Every fast boat to Nusa Penida leaves from Sanur port: from Seminyak that drive is 30-50 minutes, and Nusa Dua makes a comparable southern run from the other side of the airport, with a 30-45 minute crossing on top. Mount Batur treats them almost the same too. Both are southern bases, both sit in the 1.5-2.5 hour band to the Kintamani highlands, and pickup lands around 01:30 either way, a full hour before guests in Ubud. Nusa Dua sits at the top of that range, which is the one place the move costs you anything at all; Nusa Dua to Mount Batur sets that night out hour by hour.
