Getting to Nusa Penida
Every fast boat to Nusa Penida and Lembongan leaves from Sanur, and from a Nusa Dua hotel that transfer is 30-45 minutes. From Canggu or Uluwatu it is 60-90 minutes. The crossing itself is another 30-45 minutes, so the road decides your alarm, and on that road Nusa Dua sits on the right side of the airport.

Where dinner happens
This is where the answer turns to no. Nusa Dua is a planned resort area rather than a neighbourhood, so evenings mostly happen inside the hotel and anything else starts with a car. A ride-hailing car to Seminyak and its restaurant strip runs around IDR 160,000-200,000 each way. If you like walking out at 19:00 with no plan, you will feel the lack of it.

The night drive to the volcano
Nusa Dua sits at the top of the 1.5-2.5 hour range to Kintamani, the longest transfer of any area we collect from, so the sunrise trip knocks at about 01:30 and sometimes earlier. The jeep formats run 6-8 hours door to door, which puts you back on the strip while breakfast is still being served. It is a short night, and worth knowing before you book.
Is Nusa Dua worth visiting, or is it too enclosed?
Yes, for one kind of holiday. If you want sea you can walk into every morning, a strip that handles the logistics for you and the shortest airport run in south Bali at 15-30 minutes in any hour, Nusa Dua earns its place and very little on the mainland competes with it. No, if the holiday you picture involves walking out at 19:00 and choosing a restaurant. The area is enclosed, dinner tends to happen inside the resort, and no amount of good sand fixes that. Both halves are true at the same time.
It helps to know what the place actually is. Nusa Dua is a planned resort strip on the south-east corner of the island, not a village that grew into a tourist area, so there are no warungs to stumble on and almost no street. What it has instead is reef-protected water, wide clean sand and short drives. That works if you treat the rest of Bali as day trips: our private car with driver is from $59 per car for a full day.
Is Nusa Dua boring, and what do the evenings look like?
Boring is the wrong word. Enclosed is the right one. The strip is quiet, tidy and much the same along its length, and the ordinary texture of Bali — markets, scooter noise, a warung you did not plan on — happens somewhere else. Most evenings end inside the hotel, because that is where the restaurants are. Guests who booked Nusa Dua expecting a neighbourhood usually tell us about it on the second or third day, in the car.
The fix is to treat the evening as an outing rather than a walk. The Uluwatu cliff temple is 20-40 minutes away from most Nusa Dua hotels, which is the best sunset in the south and close enough to decide on the day. Benoa harbour, where the sunset cruise leaves, is a short 15-30 minute run. Seminyak and its restaurant strip cost around IDR 160,000-200,000 each way in a ride-hailing car, which is fine once or twice and tiresome every night.
One thing in Nusa Dua's favour almost never reaches the area guides: the surf here runs on the opposite calendar to the west coast. The break sits offshore and is reached by boat rather than paddled, and the ideal offshore wind blows around 60% of the time in December to February, against almost nothing from May through September. In the wet months, when Kuta and Canggu are blown out, this is the working side of the island.
Is Nusa Dua a good base for families with small children?
Yes, and this is the strongest case for the area. Nusa Dua, Seminyak, Uluwatu or Sanur: which base fits?
Against Seminyak the trade is blunt. Seminyak gives you walkable restaurants, shops and a sunset bar on dark volcanic sand you will not swim at; Nusa Dua gives you the swim and takes the walk away — the two are side by side in Nusa Dua or Seminyak. Against Uluwatu, the cliffs win on drama and lose on the rest: the same airport run takes 45-90 minutes and every dinner needs a car, as we set out in Uluwatu or Nusa Dua.
Sanur is the comparison people skip, and the closest thing to a rival. It has calm reef-protected water too, a seafront you can walk, more street life, and the fast-boat port inside the district instead of 30-45 minutes up the road. Its airport run is 30-45 minutes rather than 15-30. If boat days are the spine of the trip, Sanur wins; if flat water and short transfers are the brief, Nusa Dua does. What does a Nusa Dua base cost you on day trips?
The islands are the easy half. Who should not book Nusa Dua?
Skip it if you want to walk out and choose where to eat, if nightlife is part of the plan, or if you came for the ordinary texture of Bali. It is a managed resort zone and it behaves like one. Skip it too if you will be out on day trips six days out of seven: you are paying for a resort you only sleep in, and the driver collects you in the dark either way. And skip it if the budget is tight, because this is not a cheap corner of the island.
Book it if you are landing late or flying out early and want the transfer to be 15-30 minutes rather than a lottery — an airport transfer is from $15 per car. Book it if there are small children and the sea is the point of the trip. Book it if you would rather the week ran itself. That is a real holiday and Nusa Dua does it better than anywhere else on the mainland, as long as you know you are buying flat water and short drives rather than a neighbourhood.

Is Nusa Dua worth it for a first trip to Bali?
For a beach-first first trip, yes. You get flat reef-protected water, wide white sand and the shortest airport transfer in the south at 15-30 minutes in any hour. For a first trip built around temples, rice terraces and eating out, a base with more street life serves you better, because from Nusa Dua every one of those is a drive.
Can you walk anywhere from Nusa Dua?
Along the beach path and inside the resort area, yes; onto an ordinary Balinese street, not really. The strip was built as a self-contained resort zone, so restaurants, shops and bars sit inside hotels or in the managed complex rather than on a road you can wander down. Assume dinner is either in the hotel or in a car.
Is Nusa Dua or Sanur better for calm water?
