Sanur is 20-30 minutes from the terminal off-peak and 45-60 in the evening rush, over about 15 km of bypass and toll road. Ubud is 1.5-2.5 hours for roughly 40 km, and the evening commute out of Denpasar is what does the damage. On a departure morning that gap decides the whole day.

Neither area is where a night out happens, and that is why people choose them. The centre of Ubud is walkable and closes early; Sanur strings its restaurants along one road and closes earlier still. Neither of these is the loud area, so the party-against-quiet argument that settles most Bali comparisons is no help here. Both go to bed early, both work with children and with grandparents, and both sit on our pickup list for every tour we run. The real divider is the sea, and after that it is which early morning your week is built around: the boat to Nusa Penida or the drive to Mount Batur.
What does an ordinary day feel like in each area?
In Ubud the day takes its shape from the light. People walk the Campuhan ridge before the heat, reach the Monkey Forest at its 09:00 opening, go quiet through the middle of the day and eat somewhere within walking distance at night. Over 1,200 macaques live in that forest, and the terraces at Tegalalang are about 25 minutes north of the centre. The honest cost is traffic through the town, and the compensation is that the nights inland are cooler than on the coast.
Sanur runs on one flat line along the water. The seafront path is level enough for a pushchair and long enough to fill a morning, the sea is calm from breakfast onwards, and because this coast faces east the day opens with sunrise over the water instead of closing with a sunset drink. Dinner is spread along one road and finishes early. People who love Sanur call it restful and people who do not call it slow, and both are describing the same street.
