Top picks from this guide
#1
Tegalalang Rice Terrace
Entry is around IDR 25,000. Go before 08:30 — by mid-morning the swings have queues and the light goes flat. Farmers maintaining the paths may ask a small donation.
#2
Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary
Home to over 1,200 long-tailed macaques among 14th-century temples. Secure sunglasses, water bottles and anything dangling — and never bring food in.
#3
Tirta Empul Temple
A working holy-spring temple where visitors can join the melukat purification. A sarong comes with the ticket; a separate bathing sarong is used in the water.
#4
Ayung River rafting
Class II–III rapids through a gorge with carved stone reliefs and small waterfalls. Beginner-friendly, roughly two hours on the water.
#5
Tukad Cepung Waterfall
The famous sunbeams appear roughly 09:00–11:00 on clear days. You wade through shallow water, so bring shoes with grip and a dry bag.
#6
Campuhan Ridge Walk
An easy ridge path straight out of town. Best at sunrise before the heat — no ticket, no driver, no planning required.
📍 Why Ubud is the best inland base
Ubud sits roughly in the middle of everything worth driving to, which is why the 7-day itinerary uses it as the inland base. Mount Batur is about 90 minutes away, the main waterfalls 30–50 minutes, and the Ayung River gorge is on the doorstep. From the south coast, every one of those becomes a much longer day.
The town also solves evenings. You can walk to dinner, a market and a dance performance without arranging transport, which is not true of most Bali areas.
⏰ How to time the popular stops
Ubud's headline sights are all better early. The pattern is consistent: arrive before 09:00 and you get soft light and space; arrive at 11:00 and you get tour buses.
- Tegalalang rice terraces: 06:00–08:30
- Tukad Cepung waterfall: 09:00–10:00 for the light beams — more in the waterfalls guide
- Monkey Forest: opens 09:00, quietest in the first hour
- Campuhan Ridge Walk: sunrise, before it gets hot
- Tirta Empul: early, before tour groups fill the pools
🏨 Where to stay in and around Ubud
Staying in the centre means walkable restaurants and the Monkey Forest, but more scooter noise. Staying in the rice-field fringe (Penestanan, Sayan, Nyuh Kuning) buys quiet and views at the cost of a short ride into town each evening.
For a three-night stay, central is usually the better trade. For a week or a honeymoon, the valley resorts along the Sayan ridge are what people picture when they imagine Ubud.
👗 Temple etiquette that actually matters
- Sarong and sash are required — usually provided at the entrance
- Shoulders and knees covered inside temple grounds
- Do not stand higher than offerings or point your feet at shrines
- Menstruating women are traditionally asked not to enter temple grounds
- Remove hats and keep voices down during ceremonies
FAQ
How many days should I spend in Ubud?
Three nights suits most travelers: one culture day, one sunrise volcano trip with a slow afternoon, and one waterfall or adventure day. Two nights works if you only want the highlights.
Is Ubud worth visiting if I prefer beaches?
Yes, but treat it as a base rather than a beach substitute. Ubud is where the temples, rice terraces, waterfalls, river rafting and the volcano sunrise all become short drives instead of full-day expeditions.
Is the Ubud Monkey Forest safe?
Generally yes, with basic care. The macaques are wild and fast — do not carry food, secure sunglasses and loose items, avoid direct eye contact, and watch small children closely.
How far is Ubud from the airport?
Roughly 1 to 1.5 hours in normal traffic, and about 50–60 minutes late at night. Peak-hour departures through Denpasar can push it considerably longer.
