Which is the better base for Nusa Penida and the islands?
Sanur, and it is not close. The port is inside the area: Pelabuhan Sanur opened in 2022 with jetty boarding instead of the old beach launches, there are 20-22 sailings a day to Nusa Penida and around 17 to Lembongan, the first boats leave at 07:00-07:30 and the crossing takes 30-45 minutes. The crowd is older and more family-heavy than on the west coast and the night finishes early; there is no sunset either, because the coast faces east and the beach goes dark and quiet after dinner. Nusa Dua suits families who want the resort to handle the day, anyone with an awkward flight, travellers who want white sand and no decisions, and people who will spend most of the week by the water and one day on Penida.
