Top picks from this guide
#1
Uluwatu Temple at sunset
A sea temple on a cliff edge with a Kecak fire dance at sunset. Arrive well before the show — it fills up. Watch your belongings: the resident monkeys are notorious for taking sunglasses and phones.
#2
Melasti Beach
One of the easiest wins in south Bali — dramatic limestone walls and water that usually looks far clearer than the busy west coast surf beaches.
#3
Padang Padang Beach
Small and reached through a gap in the rocks. Excellent as one stop in a broader Bukit day rather than a full-day beach.
#4
Serious surf breaks
Uluwatu, Bingin and Padang Padang are reef breaks for confident surfers, not beginners. Offshore winds blow roughly 300 days a year; swell is biggest June–August.
#5
Cliff-edge beach clubs
The most dramatic settings in Bali — and the highest minimum spends, often well past $125 per daybed. Check the minimum before you commit.
🌊 Why the water looks different here
South and east-facing beaches on the Bukit sit behind reef and limestone headlands, so they get less of the sediment and swell that make the west coast beaches around Kuta and Canggu look grey-brown.
This is the practical reason to come here if clear water matters to you — the clear-water beaches guide ranks them. The trade is access: many Bukit beaches involve steep staircases down the cliff, and a few are only comfortable at certain tides.
🏄 Surf here is not beginner territory
Uluwatu, Bingin and Padang Padang break over shallow reef. They are famous because they are excellent, not because they are easy, and every season produces injuries among visitors who overestimated themselves.
If you are learning, take lessons on the sandy beach breaks at Seminyak or Canggu and come to the Bukit to watch. Peak west coast season is April–October, biggest June–August.
🚗 Distances are the catch
The Bukit is a peninsula, and everything funnels through a couple of roads. Kuta to Uluwatu is 45–60 minutes normally but 90+ after 15:00. Canggu to Uluwatu can take 2h30–3h at peak and about an hour late evening.
The practical consequence: do not day-trip here repeatedly from the north. Either stay on the Bukit for a few nights, or treat it as one dedicated day with an early start and a sunset finish.
🐒 Uluwatu Temple, practically
- Sarong and sash required — usually provided at the entrance
- Secure sunglasses, phones and hats before entering; the monkeys are practised thieves
- Arrive early for the sunset Kecak dance, seating is limited and fills fast
- Non-Hindu visitors can walk the clifftop grounds but not enter the inner temple
- The cliff path is unfenced in places — keep children close
FAQ
Is Uluwatu worth visiting?
Yes, especially for the sunset temple and Kecak dance, the clearest beaches in south Bali and world-class surf. Just plan the distances — traffic from Canggu or Seminyak can take two to three hours at peak.
Can beginners surf at Uluwatu?
No. Uluwatu, Bingin and Padang Padang break over shallow reef and are for experienced surfers. Beginners should learn on the sandy beach breaks at Kuta, Seminyak or Canggu.
What time should I arrive at Uluwatu Temple for sunset?
Well before sunset, ideally an hour or more, especially if you want a seat for the Kecak fire dance. The clifftop area and the amphitheatre both fill up quickly.
Which Uluwatu beach has the clearest water?
Melasti is the usual answer for clear water with easy access, with Padang Padang and Pandawa also strong choices. All sit behind reef and limestone headlands, which is why they look clearer than the west coast surf beaches.
