What Time to Leave for the Mount Batur Sunrise, by Hotel Area

Sunrise on Mount Batur lands between roughly 06:00 and 06:30 all year, because Bali sits close to the equator and the date barely moves it. Everything else works backwards from that. Guests in Ubud are picked up around 02:30 for the guided hike; from Seminyak, Canggu, Kuta or Nusa Dua the driver knocks a full hour earlier, because the drive north runs 1.5-2.5 hours instead of 90 minutes. The jeep formats leave slightly later than the hike, since there is no two-hour climb to fit in. This guide gives the departure time for each area, the reasoning behind it, and the two mistakes that make people miss the light.

Top picks from this guide

Ubud in Bali #1
Pickup around 02:30 The closest base to the volcano

Ubud

Ubud to the foot of Mount Batur is about 90 minutes, and at half past two the road is empty enough that the drive runs close to the mark. This is the latest pickup on the island for the guided hike, and the reason people move to Ubud the night before a Batur morning.

Seminyak, Canggu and Kuta in Bali #2
Pickup around 01:30 Anyone not willing to change hotels

Seminyak, Canggu and Kuta

The drive north runs 1.5-2.5 hours depending on where exactly you are and how the night traffic falls, which is why the pickup window starts a full hour before Ubud's. The outbound leg is usually the fastest drive of your trip — at 02:00 the roads are as empty as Bali gets.

Nusa Dua, Jimbaran and Uluwatu in Bali #3
Pickup around 01:30, sometimes earlier The longest night on the menu

Nusa Dua, Jimbaran and Uluwatu

The furthest south you stay, the earlier the knock. From the Bukit the drive is at the top of the 1.5-2.5 hour range in both directions. This is the combination where we most often suggest a jeep format rather than the hike, simply because the night is already long before the volcano starts.

Sanur in Bali #4
Pickup around 01:30-02:00 A middle position

Sanur

Sanur sits between Ubud and the southern beach areas in driving terms, and the pickup reflects that. Your exact time is confirmed on WhatsApp the day before rather than guessed from a map, because the route depends on where in Sanur you are.

The jeep leaves later than the hike in Bali #5
No climb to fit in Anyone protecting their sleep

The jeep leaves later than the hike

The guided hike needs a two-hour climb inside the schedule; the jeep does not. That is worth 30-60 minutes of sleep from the same hotel. The hot spring version picks up 02:00-03:30, and the plain jeep on a night or pre-dawn pickup.

Mount Batur pickup times by area, at a glance

Sunrise lands 06:00-06:30 all year, and the trailhead needs you there around 04:00 for the guided hike. Everything below is that arithmetic run backwards. Your exact time is confirmed on WhatsApp the day before:

Where you are stayingDeparture time for the hikeTime on the roadWhy it is this early
UbudAround 02:30About 90 minutesThe closest base — this is the latest pickup on the island
SanurAround 01:30-02:00Roughly 1.5-2 hoursBetween Ubud and the beach areas in driving terms
CangguAround 01:301.5-2.5 hoursA full hour earlier than Ubud, and the same again coming home
Seminyak and KutaAround 01:301.5-2.5 hoursEmpty roads at 02:00 make this the fastest drive of your trip
Nusa Dua and JimbaranAround 01:30, sometimes earlierAt the top of the 1.5-2.5 hour rangeThe furthest south you stay, the earlier the knock
Uluwatu and the BukitAround 01:30, sometimes earlierAt the top of the range, both waysThe longest night on the menu — worth considering a jeep instead

The jeep formats leave 30-60 minutes later than the hike from the same hotel, because there is no two-hour climb to fit into the schedule.

The fixed point everything works back from

Sunrise in Bali arrives between about 06:00 and 06:30 every month of the year. This close to the equator the date barely shifts it, and the light comes up faster than most visitors expect once it starts.

For the guided hike, the schedule then works backwards in fixed blocks: you want to be at the trailhead around 04:00, the ascent takes 1.5-2 hours at a guided pace, and you want to arrive with time to spare rather than climbing in a hurry. Add your drive, and that is your pickup.

The reason the window is given as a range rather than a single time is that the driver plans the route around where exactly your hotel sits. That is confirmed in chat the day before, not left to you to work out.

What the drive is actually like at that hour

The outbound leg is usually the fastest drive of your trip. At 02:00 the roads are as empty as Bali gets, and the journey that takes twice as long in daytime traffic runs close to the mark.

Most people sleep through it, and that is the correct plan rather than a failure of enthusiasm. On the jeep formats you can sleep both legs and spend your energy on nothing but the view.

The return is a different drive. You come back through morning traffic in daylight, which is slower, and you will be tired. Plan nothing for that afternoon except the pool, and cap any nap at about 90 minutes so the next night's sleep survives.

Two mistakes that cost people the sunrise

Asking for a later pickup to sleep in. The window exists because of the climb and the drive, not out of habit. Half an hour of extra sleep is half an hour off the summit margin, and the light does not wait.

Booking the hike from the far south. From Nusa Dua or Uluwatu the earliest pickup window plus roughly two hours of climbing in the dark is a serious night. If you are staying that far south and still want the summit, our guide to Mount Batur from south Bali covers the case for spending the previous night in Ubud instead.

About 90 minutes to the foot of the volcano. At half past two the road belongs to you and the drive runs close to the mark; the same route in daytime traffic takes noticeably longer.

Can I get a later pickup for Mount Batur?

The jeep formats leave 30-60 minutes later than the hike from the same hotel, because there is no two-hour climb to fit in. Beyond that the window is set by sunrise, which lands 06:00-06:30 regardless of how anyone feels about it.
