Where Mount Batur sits on the Bali map
Find Kintamani on a Bali map and you have found the volcano: Mount Batur rises in the highlands of the island's northeast, inside a vast caldera left by ancient eruptions. The caldera floor holds Lake Batur, and the crater rim faces east across the water toward Mount Agung, Bali's highest volcano; on clear mornings Mount Rinjani on Lombok shows on the horizon behind it. Mount Batur is an active volcano. The last eruption was in 2000, and the major eruptions of 1917 and 1926 destroyed the old village at its foot, which was rebuilt up on the caldera rim. Since 2012 the caldera has been a UNESCO Global Geopark — Indonesia's first — and the mountain is monitored continuously. The black lava fields from those eruptions still cover the lower slopes; the sunrise jeep route crosses them, and you can step out and walk on the solidified flows.
For the daytime view you do not need a tour at all: the public rim road on the Penelokan side has the classic panorama for free.
