How long Ubud to Mount Batur really takes
Ubud to the foot of Mount Batur is about 90 minutes by car. That is the number every pickup time on this page is built backwards from, and it is more honest than the fifty-something minutes a map app quotes, because the app assumes a straight empty road. The distance is genuinely short. The road is not: it climbs steadily north out of Ubud, narrows through village after village around Tegalalang and Tampaksiring, then runs along the outside of the caldera before dropping toward the lake. Ninety minutes is the planning figure in both directions.
Time of day changes it more than anything else. At 02:30 the road belongs to you and the drive runs close to the mark. From mid-morning the Tegalalang stretch fills with tour vans and scooters, and a busy day can add half an hour each way. This is one quiet advantage of the sunrise trip that nobody mentions: you do the whole drive without sitting in a single queue, and you come back down before the daytime traffic builds up behind you.

Pickup times from Ubud, and the arithmetic behind them
Everything is calculated backwards from the sun. Sunrise in Bali lands between roughly 06:00 and 06:30 all year, and you want to be in position with time to spare rather than climbing in a hurry. Work back from that: on the summit before six, at the trailhead around four, ninety minutes of driving before that — and you arrive at an Ubud pickup around 02:30. That is not a time we picked to sound dramatic. It is the only one that works.

We confirm the exact minute over WhatsApp the evening before, once we know your villa and the lane it sits on. What the drive is like at half past two in the morning
It is dark, quiet and curvy. Most guests fall asleep somewhere after Tegalalang and wake up when the car slows for the last bends. If you are prone to car sickness, the climb is the part that gets people: sit in the front, keep a window cracked, and take anything you plan to take before you leave rather than halfway up. Nothing is open in Ubud at that hour, so bring something from your room if you need food before walking.
The other thing Ubud does not prepare you for is the temperature. You leave a warm valley in a t-shirt and step out into cold wind ninety minutes later, and the summit is colder still — colder again while you stand in one place waiting for the light. Ubud to Kintamani in daylight, if 02:30 is not happening
The rim viewpoints at Kintamani sit on the same road as the trailhead, slightly before it, and they hand you the whole caldera in one look: the black lava field, the lake, and the cone across the valley. You get all of that in daylight without setting an alarm for the middle of the night. It costs the same 90 minutes of driving, and you arrive to warungs, coffee and a view instead of a torch beam. Nobody will pretend it is the same as the summit. It is the reasonable version of it.

You are back in Ubud between mid-morning and lunch, you will sleep, and whatever you had planned for the afternoon will not happen properly. Two nights in Ubud with a flight the next morning is the other common trap — you end up in the departure queue on four hours of sleep and a sunburn.
