Blue Bird from the Departures level
Blue Bird cannot collect arriving passengers downstairs, so the standing workaround is walking up to Departures and taking one that has just dropped off. Tariff runs about IDR 7,000 base plus 6,600 per km (checked August 2026). Check the bird logo and driver ID, and confirm the meter is switched on.

Lembongan instead of Penida
Lembongan sails later than Penida — first 08:30, last 17:15 — which buys roughly ninety minutes on a late arrival, and a 10-15 minute local shuttle links it to Penida the next morning. Mind the hole in the timetable: nothing leaves between 14:30 and 17:00.

A night in Sanur, boat in the morning
The answer we give most often. A Sanur hotel night costs less than a forfeited fast boat plus an unplanned room, and morning crossings are the calm ones. For the Gilis it is not even a choice — every Sanur departure is morning only, so arrival-day is off the table entirely.
How long the drive from the airport to Sanur takes
Plan on 20-30 minutes if you land in the middle of the day and 45-60 minutes or more if you land into the evening rush. It is only about 15 km, but Sanur sits on the Bypass Ngurah Rai, one of the busiest roads in south Bali, and the final stretch along Jalan Danau Tamblingan crawls when the whole neighbourhood is heading out for dinner. The two windows that hurt are 07:00-09:00 and 16:00-19:00, and the evening one is by far the worse of the two for arrivals. Land after 21:00 or before 07:00 and the same run takes 20-25 minutes. If a fast boat is waiting at the other end, budget a full hour door to gate, not thirty minutes.
Sanur is one of only three destinations where the Bali Mandara toll road genuinely changes the drive. It runs on stilts across Benoa Bay — 8.1-8.3 km of mainline, about 12.7 km counting the access ramps — and it was built because the Bypass past the runway cannot be widened. Our drivers take it and exit at Benoa, skipping the airport-area and Jimbaran congestion altogether. Category I cars pay IDR 14,000, unchanged since 27 April 2024 and still current in August 2026; pages quoting 12,500 or 13,000 are recycling older tariffs. Payment is cashless e-money, with no cash lanes at the gate. A pre-booked transfer absorbs the toll; an app fare may add it. For Kuta, Seminyak, Uluwatu or Ubud the toll does nothing at all — those lie the wrong way from the airport, and any guide implying otherwise has not driven it.
What the ride costs, and when you should just open Grab
Two price bands, and they overlap less than the internet suggests. Ride-hailing runs roughly IDR 120,000-200,000 per car (checked August 2026); the one fare check with a verifiable timestamp — taken in-app on a May 2026 weekday morning — put Sanur at IDR 148,000 on Grab and 180,000 on Gojek. Add an airport exit surcharge of about IDR 10,000-12,000, add the IDR 14,000 toll, and remember that an app quote is not a final number the way a counter fare is: it moves with demand and can run at two to three times normal when several flights land together. A pre-booked car or the official counter sits at IDR 180,000-300,000 (checked August 2026), and one operator's published 2026 rate card fixes Sanur-Renon at IDR 300,000 for a standard car and 700,000 for a large van, tolls and parking included. Counter fares quoted online disagree with each other by a factor of two, so treat the board at the counter as the only binding price.

Getting out of the terminal, and where each ride waits
The clock starts at the jet bridge, not at the kerb. Ninety minutes from landing to kerbside is typical at DPS, up to two hours when several wide-bodies arrive together — but under 30 minutes if you turn up with your e-VOA, the Bali tourist levy and the customs declaration already paid and saved as QR codes on your phone. That single variable decides more boat connections than traffic ever does. Without an e-VOA, the immigration queue alone runs 45-75 minutes off-peak and 75-120 minutes at peak, and the worst arrival waves are 10:00-14:00 and 22:00-02:00.
Then there is the geography of the arrivals hall, which is not intuitive and catches out people who have been to plenty of other airports:
- The official taxi counter is inside the hall before you walk out, commonly on the left. State the destination, pay the fixed zone fare, and a driver escorts you to the car — the most reliable walk-up option at 03:00.
- Pre-booked drivers wait in the arrival corridor with name boards, near the Flight Information Counter and the blue direction pole. The car itself collects from a designated pick-up zone rather than the door.
- Grab and Gojek run official, air-conditioned lounges in the car park structure — signposted, past the retail area, and a several-minute walk with luggage. Kerbside pickup at arrivals is banned, so there is no shortcut.
- GrabBike and scooter pickups are not available at the airport at all. Solo travellers who planned on a cheap motorbike ride discover this after clearing customs, which is a bad moment for it.
- Blue Bird cannot collect at arrivals either; the workaround people use is the Departures level one floor up. Check the bird logo and the driver ID, get in before naming the destination, and confirm the meter is running.
- Touts start calling 'taxi? transport?' the moment you clear the doors, quoting inflated flat fares. They are not the counter and they are not your driver.
Timing the airport against the last boat to Nusa Penida
Sanur Port — Pelabuhan Sanur, on Jalan Pantai Matahari Terbit — opened in 2022 and replaced the old beach launches, so you board from a jetty instead of wading out. Around twenty sailings a day cross to Nusa Penida, the first at 07:00-07:30. The last one is where the sources fight: bookable timetables end at 15:15-15:30, while some pages claim 16:00 or even 17:00. We plan to the 15:30 boat and treat anything later as a single-operator sailing that fills first. The crossing takes 30-50 minutes depending on the boat and the swell, at the long end in the windy June-September months. Tickets bought direct from operators run IDR 106,000-170,000 one way (checked August 2026); the same seat through an agent is commonly IDR 150,000-250,000, and the USD-quoted aggregator fares near $14 are the marked-up end, not the port price.

- Check-in closes 60 minutes before departure at Sanur Port, and that hour is real, not padding. For a 15:30 boat, be at the terminal by 14:15.
- The drive is 30-60 minutes, so you are leaving the airport by 13:15-13:45 — earlier if you land into the afternoon.
- Landing to kerbside averages 90 minutes, which puts wheels-down at roughly 11:45-12:15 for a comfortable connection, and about 13:00 as the absolute edge with prepaid QR codes and no checked bag.
- Land after 14:00 and the answer is no. Sleep in Sanur and take a morning boat — the sea is calmer before noon anyway.
- A missed boat is not refunded. Standard operator terms are a 100% fee inside two days of travel, and they explicitly disclaim liability for delayed flights. If your flight slips, reschedule the ticket from the transit lounge, not after you land.
- Budget IDR 25,000 per adult (IDR 15,000 per child) for the Nusa islands tourism retribution, collected on arrival. Carry it in cash, but check at booking whether it now has to be bought online — a cashless portal was reportedly introduced during 2026 and we have not confirmed how it is being enforced.
- Check the luggage allowance before you commit. Operator terms commonly list 15 kg per person on standard boats, with excess charged and subject to space — which collides awkwardly with a 23 kg long-haul checked bag.
Going to the Gilis? Sanur is a choice, not a default
Sanur has direct Gili boats, and they are why plenty of people end up here rather than driving east. Three sailings, all in the morning: Semaya One at 08:45, Starfish at 09:00, Scoot at 09:30, crossing in 3 to 3h45 for IDR 345,000-460,000 one way (checked August 2026). The trade is straightforward — a longer sea leg in exchange for a 20-30 minute drive instead of the two-hour haul east, and the Semaya One route chains Lembongan and the Gilis onto one ticket. The catch is equally straightforward: every departure is morning-only, so a Sanur Gili boat is useless on the day you land.
Padangbai has the shortest crossing and is the default harbour, but the drive is what kills arrival-day Gili trips: 1h10 to 2h30 from the airport, so plan two hours, and the last dependable departure is early afternoon, around 13:00-13:30. Claims of 16:00 boats are seasonal and operator-specific. To make the early-afternoon crossing you would need to land by roughly 07:30, which almost no long-haul arrival does. Amed is closed for construction, so ignore the pages still listing it as an option. Our advice here is the boring one: overnight in Sanur or Candidasa and take a morning boat. Night landings, and the day nothing moves at all
The airport runs 24 hours and so does the road to Sanur. What changes after dark is the reliability order, not the availability. Pre-booked first: the driver waits regardless of the delay and the price was agreed before you boarded. The official counter second: open around the clock, and the most dependable walk-up option at 03:00. The apps last: driver numbers drop sharply after midnight, acceptance can take repeated refreshes, and fares can run at two to three times normal when a cluster of flights lands between 22:00 and 02:00. A night surcharge of about IDR 50,000 between 18:00 and 06:00 is commonly reported at the counter, but we have not been able to confirm it — ask before you pay rather than after. The compensation is the road itself: at 02:00 the run to Sanur is 20-25 minutes and the toll gates are empty.
Two calendar warnings, because no routing app predicts either. Nyepi falls on Thursday 19 March 2026: the airport closes from 06:00 that day until 06:00 the next, the toll road closes with it, ferries are suspended, and no transfer of any kind exists at any price. The 18th and the 20th then become the most oversubscribed transport days of the year. Year-round, a Melasti procession, a temple odalan or a cremation can close a coastal road for an hour with no warning, and Galungan on 17 June 2026 and Kuningan on 27 June 2026 bring the biggest of them. This is the honest reason a Bali driving estimate is always a range and never a single figure — and the reason we tell guests with a morning boat to leave a margin they will probably not need.
