Blue Bird from the Departures level
Blue Bird cannot collect at arrivals — the local cooperatives hold that ground — so the standard workaround is the escalator up to Departures and a cab that has just dropped off. Tariff runs about IDR 7,000 flagfall plus roughly 6,500 per km, minimum 30,000. Confirm the meter is switched on before the car moves.

Published figures disagree by a factor of two or three, so plan on roughly IDR 150,000-200,000 for Kuta or Seminyak and 350,000-500,000 for Ubud, and treat the board at the counter as the only binding price.

If you land at nine and the villa will not take you until two, a transfer is the wrong product. A car and driver runs from $59 per car for the day, fuel, parking and waiting included, which turns the airport run into the first stop of an itinerary rather than a separate fare you pay and forget.

What is not on the menu: bikes and Uber
GrabBike and GoRide do not pick up from the airport at all — Grab states this on its own airport page — so a solo traveller counting on a scooter ride out is getting a car whether they budgeted for one or not. Uber has not operated here since 2018, when it sold the region to Grab. Cars only, from the lounge.

The "transport, taxi?" men outside
They start on you the second the doors open and quote inflated flat fares that have nothing to do with the counter you just walked past. They are not the official counter and they have no fare board. Price the trip in Grab before you exit the building — that number is your anchor, and it is the whole of your leverage.
What a ride out of Bali airport actually costs
A car from the airport to Kuta costs IDR 106,500 in Grab, roughly IDR 150,000-200,000 at the official taxi counter, and IDR 150,000-250,000 pre-booked with a name-board driver. To Ubud, the far end of the scale, the same three run about IDR 338,500, IDR 350,000-500,000 and IDR 350,000-450,000. Every figure below is per car, one way, and was compiled in August 2026; the app fares come from an in-app check on a single May 2026 morning, which is the only price data in this whole niche carrying a timestamp anyone can verify.
Read the columns against each other rather than reaching for the lowest. The app quote is the cheapest headline and the least binding — airport rides are priced above the equivalent city ride, tolls are extra on the Sanur and Nusa Dua runs, and the number moves with demand. The counter fare is fixed but sits above the app, commonly quoted at around 15% more. The pre-booked fare is the only one you know before you land: our private airport pickup holds from $15 — about IDR 267,000 at the August 2026 rate of roughly IDR 17,800 to the dollar — booked on WhatsApp with no prepayment, whatever hour the plane arrives.

Why the dollar prices on other transfer pages are wrong
The rupiah sat near IDR 17,800 to the US dollar through August 2026 — the mid-market rate ran roughly 17,762 to 18,087 over the preceding month. Most transfer pages you will find were written when the rate was 15,000-16,000 and have never been re-converted, so their dollar column overstates what you will actually hand over by roughly 10-18%. An IDR 350,000 transfer is about USD 20 today; the article quoting the identical rupiah figure calls it $23-25 and has done for two years.
That is why we lead with rupiah and stamp a date on it. Even the rupiah figures deserve a health warning, because this corner of the internet recycles itself: one 2026-dated page quotes a flat IDR 70,000-150,000 band for Kuta, Uluwatu and Ubud alike, which cannot be true for all three; another states Canggu is 300,000 and then 350,000-500,000 two lines apart. Where each option is, and what gets added to the quote
The walk out of arrivals goes past Starbucks and Customer Service, past the transfer meeting points, then past the rank of drivers holding name boards — and only after that, turning right, do you reach the ride-hailing area. Knowing the order matters, because the touts start the moment you clear the doors and the thing you actually want is usually still ahead of you.
Then there are the extras that separate a quote from a total. An airport exit surcharge of roughly IDR 10,000-12,000 on app fares is reported by 2026 guides, though we have not been able to confirm it against an operator document — treat it as likely rather than certain. The Bali Mandara toll is real and traceable: the operator set Category I at IDR 14,000 in April 2024 and it is still current, even though several 2026 pages reprint the older 13,000. A pre-booked private fare absorbs tolls, airport parking and waiting time; an app quote does not, which is how a 128,000 Grab to Nusa Dua and a 300,000 private car end up closer than they first look — and identical if the app surges.

How long the drive takes, and what makes it worse
Every drive time from this airport is a range, and the spread is traffic rather than distance. Nusa Dua is the one honest exception at 15-30 minutes in any hour, because the toll road bypasses the surface congestion entirely. Kuta runs 15-30 minutes, Seminyak 20-30 off-peak but 45-75 at peak, Sanur 20-30 midday and 35-50 at peak, Uluwatu about 45 minutes on a clean run and up to 90 on a late-afternoon landing, Canggu 40-60 normally and 75-90 or more at peak, and Ubud 60-90 minutes in normal traffic stretching to 1.5-2.5 hours in the evening. Any service advertising a 60-minute airport-to-Ubud run is quoting the 3am best case.
Two windows do the damage: 07:00-09:00 and 16:00-19:00, with the evening one far worse for arrivals because three flows compound — the commuter exodus out of Denpasar that wrecks the Ubud run, the sunset rush up onto the Bukit, and ordinary Sunset Road and Kerobokan congestion feeding Seminyak and Canggu. Land between 15:00 and 19:00 and budget the top of every range above; land after 21:00 or before 07:00 and you can budget the bottom. Then there is the thing no routing app predicts: a temple anniversary, a cremation or a Melasti procession can close a coastal road for an hour with no warning, and on Nyepi, Thursday 19 March 2026, the airport and the toll road shut for 24 hours and no transfer exists at any price.

Solo with a backpack, or a family with three suitcases
If you are one person with a cabin bag heading to Kuta, Seminyak or Nusa Dua in daylight, book Grab or Gojek from the lounge and do not book us. At IDR 106,500 to Kuta against a pre-booked 150,000-250,000, the gap is real money and the walk to the car park is a mild inconvenience, not a hardship. Price both apps before you commit — they leapfrog each other by destination, and in the May check Gojek beat Grab to Seminyak while losing badly to Canggu. If you travel light and want a meter rather than an algorithm, the Departures-level Blue Bird is the cheapest legitimate metered ride out of the terminal.
The maths inverts with people and bags. Four adults and four suitcases do not fit a standard app car, an XL costs roughly 70-80% more where you can get one, and there is no dispatcher helping you if the first two drivers cancel. Add a Canggu or Ubud destination at 17:00, or an arrival after midnight, or a first trip to Bali with nobody on the other end, and a fixed price with a driver holding your name at the meeting point stops being a luxury. One more case worth naming: if you land in the morning with a plan for the day, buy the day rather than the ride. A car and driver runs from $59 per car for the whole day — the going market rate for a standard car is IDR 600,000-900,000, which four people split into IDR 175,000 each — with fuel, parking and waiting at every stop included. Landing after midnight
The airport runs 24 hours and so does the ground transport, but the reliability order inverts after dark. The official counter is the most dependable walk-up option at 03:00: you state the destination, pay the fixed fare, and someone walks you to the car. The apps degrade — driver numbers online drop sharply after midnight, acceptance can take repeated refreshes, and the wait is unpredictable. A pre-booked driver is simply there, tracking the flight, however late it lands.
Whether prices rise at night has three different answers, all correct, because they describe three different products. Apps surge, and when several flights land together between 22:00 and 02:00 the reported multiplier is double or triple — this is the best-established of the three. The counter is commonly reported to add a night surcharge of about IDR 50,000 between 18:00 and 06:00, but we could not confirm it independently, so ask at the desk rather than assuming. A pre-booked fixed rate does not move at all. The useful takeaway does not depend on resolving any of that: a pre-booked transfer is the only option whose price you know before you land, and the apps are the only option that can triple. The consolation is that the roads are empty — a 03:00 Ubud run genuinely can approach the 60 minutes that daytime arrivals never see.
