A night in Sanur, boat at first light
The version that works. Land, drive 20-30 minutes, sleep a few hundred metres from the jetty, then take the 07:00-07:30 Penida boat or the 08:30 Lembongan one with the whole day ahead. One hotel night costs less than a missed non-refundable fast boat plus the unplanned night you end up taking anyway.
Can you land and reach the islands the same day?
Straight answer: Nusa Lembongan usually yes, Nusa Penida only if you land before midday, the Gili Islands almost never. The last widely bookable fast boat from Sanur to Nusa Penida goes at 15:15-15:30, and check-in closes 60 minutes before departure, so you have to be inside the terminal by 14:15. Work backwards from there: 30-60 minutes from the airport to Sanur Port, and about 90 minutes from wheels down to the kerb at Ngurah Rai on a normal day, up to two hours at peak. That puts a comfortable landing at 11:45-12:15 and the absolute edge near 13:00 — and the edge only exists if you clear immigration on an autogate with no checked bag. A handful of pages advertise 16:00 or 17:00 Penida sailings; we cannot find them in any bookable timetable, and where they do run they are single-operator and the first to sell out.
Nusa Lembongan runs later than Penida, and for an afternoon arrival that is the single most useful thing to know. Sailings from Sanur start at 08:30 and the last two go at 17:00 and 17:15 — roughly 90 minutes more runway than Penida gives you. The catch is the hole in the middle of the timetable: nothing departs between 14:30 and 17:00, so a 15:00 landing is not catching "the next boat", it is catching the evening boat. Lembongan and Penida are linked by a 10-15 minute local shuttle, which makes arriving on Lembongan tonight and crossing tomorrow a legitimate way to save a day. The Gili Islands are a different order of problem, and the boat is not the culprit — the drive is. Padangbai sits 55-60 km east of the airport, 1h10 to 2h30 away depending on the hour, and the last dependable departure to Gili Trawangan is early afternoon, around 13:00-13:30. With a 60-minute check-in and 90 minutes in the terminal, your flight would need to land by roughly 07:30 to make it without sprinting. Sanur's direct Gili boats all leave between 08:45 and 09:30, so they do not rescue the day either. Getting from the arrivals hall to the jetty
The ninety minutes between landing and the kerb is the part almost everyone leaves out of the plan. Prepay three things and it collapses: the e-VOA (a biometric autogate takes 60-90 seconds), the Bali tourist levy of IDR 150,000 per foreign visitor through the Love Bali portal, and the customs e-CD declaration. All three are QR codes on your phone, and travellers who arrive holding them regularly clear in under 30 minutes. Arrive without them and the immigration queue alone runs 45-75 minutes off-peak and 75-120 minutes at peak, with the worst arrival waves between 10:00-14:00 and 22:00-02:00.
Three real options for the ride. Grab and Gojek both work at the airport but cannot collect you at the arrivals kerb — you book in the app and walk to a signposted lounge in the car park structure, several minutes away with luggage, and GrabBike is not available for airport pickup at all. App fares checked in-app on a May 2026 morning ran IDR 148,000 Grab / 180,000 Gojek to Sanur and IDR 106,500 / 119,500 to Kuta, before an airport exit surcharge of roughly IDR 10,000-12,000 and the IDR 14,000 Mandara toll on the Sanur run. The official taxi counter inside the arrivals hall sells fixed zone fares paid before you board — roughly IDR 150,000-200,000 for Kuta or Seminyak and IDR 250,000-400,000 for Sanur, Canggu, Nusa Dua or Uluwatu, checked August 2026 — but published figures for that counter disagree by a factor of two or three across sources, so treat ours as orientation: the board at the counter is the only binding price.

The same holds for the Padangbai run, where the drive is 1h10 to 2h30 and no shared shuttle will wait for a late flight.
What the boat actually costs, in rupiah
Sanur to Nusa Penida, one way, published August 2026: IDR 106,000-170,000 buying direct from the operator counters, against IDR 150,000-250,000 through most online agents. The cheap end is the smaller, slower boats — Starfish, The Angkal and Axe Stone at around IDR 117,000-120,000 — and Semaya One at IDR 170,000 is the premium end. When an aggregator quotes you "about USD 14", note what that means at August 2026's rate of roughly IDR 17,800 to the dollar: about IDR 249,000, i.e. double the counter price, and that difference is the agent's margin rather than the fare. Most travel pages online still convert at 15,000-16,000, which is exactly why their dollar figures are wrong — and why every number on this page leads with rupiah.
For the Gilis the figure to hold onto is the bundle price. A Padangbai ticket including the shuttle from Denpasar, Kuta, Seminyak, Sanur or Ubud should not exceed about IDR 350,000 one way, and some operators sell the same journey at IDR 790,000. Sanur's direct morning boats to Gili Trawangan run IDR 345,000 (Starfish), IDR 420,000 (Semaya One) and IDR 460,000 (Scoot) for a 3h to 3h45 crossing, checked August 2026. Padangbai has the shortest sea leg at 1h30-2h and the longest drive; Serangan is the closest harbour to the airport, with one 09:00 sailing of about 2h30. Amed, still listed as a departure point on plenty of pages, is closed for construction — operators now sell it as a car transfer to Padangbai plus the boat. Two smaller numbers catch people at the jetty. The Nusa islands charge a tourism retribution of IDR 25,000 per adult and IDR 15,000 per child, collected on arrival at Banjar Nyuh, Sampalan and Buyuk; carry it in cash, but ask your operator when you book — there are reports of a move to prepaid online payment during 2026 that we have not been able to confirm from an official source. And fast boats work to a 15 kg standard / 25 kg premium luggage allowance per person, with excess charged and subject to available space. That is worth confirming with the operator when you book rather than discovering it at the gangway with a 23 kg suitcase you have just carried off a long-haul flight.
When the flight slips: what it costs and what to do first
An arrival-day boat ticket is, in practice, non-refundable. Standard operator terms are free cancellation 7 or more days out, a 50% fee 2-7 days out, and 100% inside 2 days — and operators state plainly that they are not liable for delayed or missed flights, late pickups or sea conditions. Booking agents pass that disclaimer straight through to the operator. So the true cost of a tight connection is not the ticket price, it is the ticket plus the unplanned Bali hotel night you were trying to avoid in the first place.
The mitigation is timing, not argument. Some resellers allow free rescheduling up to 24 hours before departure and charge inside that window, which means the moment to move the booking is when your airline first shows the delay — while you are still at the departure gate, not after you land in Denpasar. Weather is treated differently: if the operator cancels for sea conditions you get a refund or a free move to the next available sailing. Everything below assumes you find out early enough to act.

- Switch islands rather than days if you are losing the Penida boat: the 17:00 and 17:15 Lembongan sailings plus a 10-15 minute shuttle in the morning save the day for the price of one hotel change
- Do not book a shared shuttle on arrival day — it runs to a fixed pickup window and calls at several hotels, and it will not wait for you
- Treat the ticket as gone and re-buy in the morning rather than negotiating at the counter; Sanur runs 20-22 daily sailings to Penida, so a seat tomorrow is not a scarce resource
- Book the Sanur hotel while you are still in the air if you will land after 14:00 — you have already made the decision, you just have not admitted it yet

For most arrivals the right answer is unglamorous: land, drive 20-30 minutes to Sanur (45-60 or more if you hit the evening peak), sleep a few hundred metres from the jetty, and take the 07:00-07:30 Penida boat or the 08:30 Lembongan one with the entire day in front of you. Sanur Port has been a proper terminal with jetty boarding since 2022 — no wading out to a beach-launched boat with your bags overhead — and there are 20-22 daily sailings to Penida and around 17 to Lembongan, so the morning is never the bottleneck. The other thing a Sanur night buys is a real day on the island instead of a half one.
