One thing to say plainly before the detail: there is no version of this drive that is short in the afternoon. Tegalalang sits 25 minutes north of central Ubud and is quiet only before 09:00, which from the coast means leaving in the dark. When is it worth moving to Ubud instead?
Move when the interior is more than one day of your trip. For a day of stops, a car beats app rides. Grab and Gojek are cheapest for short hops, but across a full day a private car with driver from $59 per car costs less, and the car waits while you walk a terrace or sit down to eat.
