What happened at Pelaga Eco Park?
A landslide hit the Pelaga Eco Park glamping site in Pelaga village, Petang district, Badung, at about 23:00 on Sunday 1 November 2026, while heavy rain was falling, according to Detik Bali and NusaBali. ANTARA reported that Bali's search and rescue office received the report at 06:10 on 2 November. The site's management said 23 guests were staying and 21 were safe. Two people were missing: an Indonesian guest and a foreign national whose identity police were still trying to establish. Reports differ on the damage. ANTARA counted four of the site's 25 tents damaged, while Detik described several units swept away or brought down by two slides, the second at about 23:20. ANTARA and NusaBali reported rain of 121 mm in a day in Pelaga village.
ANTARA and NusaBali reported 127 rescue workers on Monday, and Detik reported 145. Early searches by the site team, the Badung disaster agency and local police stopped because of heavy rain and a very steep access road, and a narrow road later kept excavators away from the debris. Teams partially closed the gates of an upstream dam, sprayed water on the earth piles around the tents and searched the river as far as the Batulantang dam, about 500 metres away. Detik Bali reported that on the first day searchers found a mobile phone, three mattresses and a pair of shoes about 200 metres upstream of the dam, but not the missing people. The search was due to continue on Tuesday 3 November, so the situation will have changed by the time you read this.
The Badung regent said the regency would carry out a thorough evaluation of the safety of tourist accommodation, especially in natural destinations at risk of disaster, and that this must not happen again. North Badung is being developed for nature tourism and agrotourism. The reports did not say whether inspections, closures or new permit rules would follow.
What else did the rain do across Bali?
BPBD Bali, the provincial disaster agency, recorded disasters at 64 other points on 1 and 2 November, mostly landslides and fallen trees, according to NusaBali and ANTARA. By regency: Gianyar 15, Karangasem 12, Bangli 11, Klungkung 10, Badung 6, Buleleng 5 and Tabanan 5. It said the situation was generally under control and that Pelaga was the only site where a search for missing people was still needed.
In Bangli, a road on a tourism route in Pulasari village, Tembuku district, sank on the night of 1 November when river water ran at high volume, and it was closed temporarily. A few days earlier, on 28 October, BBMKG had already warned of moderate to heavy rain on 28 to 31 October and of waves up to 3 metres in the waters south of Bali.
When does the rainy season start in 2026?
BBMKG's Denpasar office said on 2 November that most of Bali's 20 seasonal zones should enter the rainy season in November 2026, with the peak in February 2027. BMKG's national outlook of 22 September 2026 had a slightly later start: November for parts of Bali and December for most of the island, with the peak in January 2027 in central Bali and February 2027 across most of it. BMKG linked the late start to a very strong El Niño.
Rain had not arrived in September, and The Bali Sun reported on 21 September 2026 that drought was affecting much of the province. A year earlier, in September 2025, floods hit Denpasar and Badung, and local leaders were now urging stronger flood preparation. Our Bali in November guide has the rain normals, and Bali in December covers the weeks that follow.
What should visitors change on a heavy rain day?
None of this means cancelling a trip. It means picking the day's plan by the alert level. Our rainy season tours guide explains which tours run in rain: land routes usually do, and boat trips are the first to be called off.
- Sea days: boats stop when the swell rises. Keep a spare day, and read our guide to getting to Nusa Penida for the crossing.
- Waterfalls and rivers: the water runs brown and the steps get slippery after heavy rain. Go before noon and wear shoes with grip; Bali waterfalls by season shows which falls hold up.
- Mount Batur: cloud is the risk, and guides run most mornings. Our Batur rainy season guide gives the odds.
- Hillside and river-valley stays: after Pelaga, it is fair to ask your host about the slope, the drainage and the plan when an alert is in force, and to move to a solid building rather than stay in a tent or a light unit near a cliff or river.
- Roads: allow extra time. Landslides, fallen trees and sunken roads were reported in seven regencies on 2 November.
- Emergencies: the national search and rescue agency, Basarnas, lists 115 as its emergency number, and The Bali Sun gave 110 for Bali Police on 24 September 2026.
A day you can change is worth more than a day you cannot. Our private car with driver is from $59 per car. The Ubud rice terrace, temple and volcano tour is from $65 per car plus tickets of $22 per person, and the UNESCO heritage tour is from $65 per car plus tickets of $20 per person. Both take about 10 hours and carry on in light rain. On a siaga day, ask us the evening before whether the route should change. We take bookings on WhatsApp with no prepayment.
