Top picks from this guide
#1
Sanur or Nusa Dua as a base
Reef-protected, gentle water and flat footpaths — the two areas that genuinely suit small children. Very different from the surf beaches of Kuta and Canggu.
#2
Blue Lagoon snorkeling
A sheltered bay, 2–8 m deep with a sandy bottom and life jackets provided. One of the safest ocean snorkeling spots in Bali for families.
#3
Ubud Monkey Forest
Over 1,200 macaques. Genuinely fun, but they are wild, fast and will grab food or dangling items. Keep small children close and carry nothing loose.
#4
White water rafting
Class II–III rapids, life jackets and helmets included. Minimum age is typically 5–7 depending on operator; the maximum is usually 65.
#5
Mount Batur by jeep
The 4WD version reaches the viewpoint with only a short walk, so children can see the sunrise. Dress warmly — it is 12–18°C before dawn.
🏝️ Where to base yourself
This is the decision that shapes the whole trip. Sanur and Nusa Dua have reef-protected, calm water and flat, walkable areas. Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu have real surf, strong currents and grey volcanic sand — fine for teenagers, stressful with a five-year-old.
Ubud works well as a second base: green, cooler than the coast, and short drives to rice terraces, rafting and the volcano. What it does not have is a beach, so most families split the week between one coastal base and Ubud.
⏳ Drive times decide your day
Bali's distances punish over-ambitious plans, and children feel it first. Kuta to Ubud can take up to 2h30 in traffic. Canggu to Uluwatu can take 3 hours at peak.
The rule that works: one main activity a day, mornings for anything outdoors, afternoons near the pool. A private driver for the long days costs about $40–55 for 10 hours including fuel, which is usually less stressful and not much more expensive than several app rides.
🚫 What does not work with young children
- Kelingking Beach descent on Nusa Penida — 250 irregular steps and rock scrambling
- Angel's Billabong — swimming is banned after multiple deaths; it is a viewpoint only
- Mount Batur hiking trek — the jeep version is the family-friendly alternative
- Uluwatu reef surf breaks — shallow reef, for experienced surfers only
- Sunrise starts back to back — one pre-dawn wake-up per trip is plenty
- Long temple circuits in midday heat, with dress codes and little shade
🧴 Practical family notes
- Car seats can usually be arranged with a private driver, but ask when booking — they are not standard
- Sun is equatorial and stronger than it feels; hats, high SPF and shade breaks matter
- Stick to bottled or filtered water, including for brushing teeth
- Warungs are cheap and generally fine; nasi goreng and mie goreng are reliable child-friendly options at $1.30–2.60
- Mosquito repellent for dawn and dusk, especially inland and around Ubud
- Bali's international-standard clinics are good but expensive — travel insurance is not optional
- The tourist levy of IDR 150,000 applies to every visitor including infants
FAQ
Is Bali good for families with young children?
Yes, if you base yourself in the right area. Sanur and Nusa Dua have calm, reef-protected water suited to small children, while Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu have real surf and strong currents. Pairing a calm coastal base with a few nights in Ubud works well.
What is the best area in Bali for families?
Sanur and Nusa Dua for calm swimming and easy walking, plus Ubud as a green second base for rice terraces, rafting and the volcano. Avoid basing a family trip on the surf coast unless your children are teenagers.
What is the minimum age for rafting in Bali?
Typically 5 to 7 years depending on the operator, with a maximum around 65. The Ayung River near Ubud runs Class II–III rapids and includes life jackets, helmets and a guide in every raft.
Can children see the Mount Batur sunrise?
Yes, using the jeep tour rather than the trek. A 4WD drives to a viewpoint near the summit with only a short walk. Dress warmly — temperatures before dawn sit around 12–18°C even though it is hot at sea level.
Is the Ubud Monkey Forest safe for kids?
With close supervision. The macaques are wild and quick to grab food, sunglasses or anything dangling. Carry no food, secure loose items, avoid direct eye contact and keep young children within arm's reach.
