Serangan harbour
Serangan is the harbour Canggu guests are normally routed to, and the drive is the easy part: 30-60 minutes free-flow, but plan 60-90 in the morning boat wave. The crossing is where the time goes — 2h15-2h30 on a direct service, 2.5-3.5h if the boat calls at Lembongan, Penida or Gili Gede on the way. The port's own marketing puts Canggu twenty minutes away; ignore that figure entirely.

Padang Bai harbour
1h10-1h15 free-flow and 2h-2h30 realistically, because it means crossing the whole south of Bali and then running the Ida Bagus Mantra coastal bypass, which clogs from about 07:00. The reward is the shortest crossing on the route: about 1h30 to Gili Trawangan on a direct boat. Departures cluster in an 08:00-09:00 wave, with early-afternoon sailings after.

Sanur harbour
The third working harbour, with a drive from Canggu broadly like Serangan's but a slower boat: 2h45-3h outbound, and notably longer coming back at 3h15-4h15. Take Sanur because the operator or the schedule you want sails from there, not because it saves anything. That long return leg is the part people forget when they plan the last day of a trip.

The free pickup line
This one fact decides your morning. Most operators publish a free hotel transfer zone whose edge is drawn at Canggu Club, Canggu Station or Canggu Point, and one agent says outright that Canggu sits on the edge of the free pickup area. Berawa and Batu Bolong are usually inside it; Pererenan, Nyanyi, Cemagi, Seseh and Tumbak Bayuh usually are not. Out-of-zone guests get a central Canggu meeting point instead of a villa door.

The out-of-zone surcharge
Checked August 2026: Gili Getaway publishes IDR 225,000 per private car, maximum four people, or IDR 50,000 per person on a shared vehicle for Canggu beyond Canggu Club. Generic agent guidance runs IDR 150,000 per person or IDR 250,000-400,000 per private car, and one Padang Bai operator prices Canggu at IDR 385,000 per minivan. Paid in cash to the driver on the day, and it varies by operator, vehicle and season.

The return leg
Boats back to Serangan leave the islands around midday — Gili T 12:15, Gili Air 12:30 on one published schedule, reaching Serangan somewhere in a 15:00-15:45 window that sources disagree about. Padang Bai-bound boats run later: last from Gili T around 15:15, some to 15:30-16:00, and from Gili Air around 15:35. Whichever you take, the drive back to Canggu is still ahead of you.
How long Canggu to the Gili Islands actually takes
There is no boat from Canggu, and there is no direct Gili connection from anywhere on Bali's west coast. Every trip is a car to one of three working harbours — Padang Bai in East Bali, Serangan or Sanur in the south — and then a fast boat. From a Canggu villa, door to door to Gili Trawangan is 4h30-5h via Serangan (short drive, long boat) or 5h-5h30 via Padang Bai (long drive, short boat). You cannot have both a short drive and a short crossing from here. That combination belongs to Ubud, which is why the same trip runs shorter from Ubud.
The number to plan around is the pickup time, not the departure time. Operators set Canggu pickups roughly 90 minutes before a Serangan sailing, so a 09:00 boat means 07:00-07:30 at your gate, and an 08:00-09:00 Padang Bai boat means 06:00-06:30. Check-in closes 30-60 minutes before departure, which is part of why the advertised totals never match reality. Treat every drive time an operator publishes as a free-flow figure: on this route they run 40-60% short.
What makes the drive worse, roughly in order: the 07:30-09:30 morning wave, which is precisely when the boats leave; the shared-shuttle loop collecting other guests around Seminyak and Kerobokan; temple ceremony road closures, which happen year-round and without notice; rain; and roadworks on the Ida Bagus Mantra bypass. Canggu's own lanes are the first bottleneck, before you reach a main road at all. Local advice we agree with: once traffic builds, no shortcut saves you — leaving earlier is the only lever.
Does the included pickup actually reach your villa?
Almost every fast boat ticket advertises free hotel pickup, and for Canggu that promise has a hard edge to it. The published zones cover Kerobokan, Seminyak, Legian, Kuta, Sanur, Denpasar and the airport in full, then stop partway through Canggu at a named landmark — Canggu Club for one operator, Canggu Station or Canggu Point for others. Which side of that line your villa sits on is worth checking before you book anything, because it decides both the price and whether a driver reaches your door at 07:00 or you have to get yourself to a car park.
Roughly how it falls in practice:
- Usually inside the free zone: Berawa, Batu Bolong, and the Canggu Club end of the strip
- Usually outside: Pererenan, Nyanyi, Cemagi, Seseh and Tumbak Bayuh — anything past the Canggu Club line
- Out of zone, cheapest fix: the shared-vehicle surcharge at IDR 50,000 per person, checked August 2026 — under-advertised, and the right answer for one or two people travelling light
- Out of zone, private car: IDR 225,000 for up to four, or IDR 385,000 per minivan on one operator's tariff — only worth it for a family or a group with luggage
- Either way: confirm at booking whether the transfer is in the ticket price. One operator's own agent pages describe the identical service as complimentary on one page and IDR 385,000 on another, so inclusion depends on the operator and the booking channel, not on a rule

What the boat costs, checked August 2026
Fast boat fares from Bali to the Gilis run IDR 330,000-790,000 one way, most commonly IDR 400,000-550,000, with returns around IDR 950,000 — all checked August 2026. From Padang Bai we found listings at IDR 400,600 and IDR 450,000, with named operators at IDR 685,000 and IDR 790,000; from Sanur, IDR 425,000-550,000 depending on the operator. Price moves with the port, the season, how far ahead you book and which channel you book through, so read every figure as a starting point rather than a quote.
Lead with rupiah, and be suspicious of dollar prices you read elsewhere. The rupiah sat near IDR 17,800 to the dollar in August 2026 while most travel pages still convert at 15,000-16,000, which is why their dollar figures read low by about a fifth. At the August rate the band above works out to roughly USD 19-44 one way, and that conversion will be stale within a month or two. There is also a harbour fee at Padang Bai, Serangan and Gili Trawangan: sometimes included in the ticket, sometimes collected in cash on the spot, and no source publishes the amount — so carry small notes and do not count on a card reader at any pier.

If you are actually heading to mainland Lombok rather than the three islands, the Lombok options are a different calculation, and the 47-minute flight is not the obvious winner it looks like.
Why a Gili day trip from Canggu does not work
The honest answer to the day trip question is no, and the reason is the turnaround rather than the distance. The Serangan boats a Canggu guest would naturally take arrive at Gili Trawangan around 11:00-12:00 and depart back at 12:15. That is somewhere between fifteen minutes and an hour on the island, for a 4h30-5h journey in each direction. Nobody sells it in those terms, but that is what the timetable says. The workaround — routing via Padang Bai to reach the later returns — makes the arithmetic worse, not better. It needs a pickup around 05:45, it does buy you a genuine island window, and then it puts you back in Canggu around 19:00-20:00, with the evening leg run in the worst traffic of the day. That is a fourteen-hour day for a few hours of beach. We will drive it if you insist, with a car and driver for the day from $59 per car, but we would rather say plainly that it is not a good day out.
One night fixes it. The Gili overnight getaway from $70 turns the same two crossings into a proper trip, because you sleep on the island and the return boat stops being a deadline. And if what you want is an island day trip that genuinely works from Canggu, take Nusa Penida from $75 — the crossing is a fraction of the length, the return boats run late enough to matter, and you are back for dinner.
Weather, Nyepi, and the days nothing sails
December to February is peak cancellation season on the Bali-Gili crossing, and cancellations arrive in multi-day blocks rather than as single missed sailings. In January 2026 the national weather agency forecast 2.5-6.0 metre waves across the Bali, Lombok and Gili routes, and 72 fast boats running 80-90 trips were cancelled. This leg crosses open water and is far more swell-sensitive than the Nusa Penida runs. Travelling in that window, build a buffer day into the itinerary and never schedule a Gili return for the same day as an international departure.
One fixed date to know: Nyepi, the day of silence, falls on Monday 8 March 2027. Ferries are formally suspended, Ngurah Rai airport closes for a full 24 hours, and nobody is permitted on the roads — which means no hotel pickup either, and the days on both sides of it compress as everyone reschedules. No Gili or Lombok transfer of any kind operates that day, ours included.
Same-day boat-to-flight connections deserve the same caution. A midday boat back to Serangan lands you in that 15:00-15:45 window on a good day, and the drive from the harbour to the airport sits on top of a boat that can run late.
