Padang Bai to Bangsal by fast boat

Two and a half to three hours or more at sea, but the drive shrinks to 20-30 minutes from the airport in light traffic, 45-60 or more at peak. This is the trade every South Bali guest makes on this route: a short drive for a long boat. You do not get to have both.

The longest sea leg of the fast-boat options, up to four or five hours, usually because the service calls somewhere else on the way. Serangan is the closest harbour to Denpasar airport, which is why it gets booked; on a rough day it is also the longest stretch you will spend in a boat that is moving under you.

Forty to fifty minutes in the air, multiple departures daily on Lion Group, TransNusa and Citilink. It only wins if you are going south: the airport is at Praya, 25-30 minutes from Kuta Lombok but roughly 1h30 from Bangsal. The ASDP public ferry, Padang Bai to Lembar
The working car ferry: 4 to 5 hours normally, 4 to 6 and occasionally longer in swell, running every 60 to 90 minutes around the clock with no booking and tickets sold at the port counter only. Fares are a fraction of the fast boat. Lembar is in the southwest, though, so Gili-bound passengers land hours from where they want to be.

Fly instead and you land at Praya, then spend about 90 minutes driving north to the same jetty you could have arrived at directly.
Fast boat or flight? It depends which end of Lombok you want
The answer is geographic, not a question of speed. Lombok International Airport sits at Praya, in the far south of the island, while every fast boat from Bali lands at Bangsal in the northwest. The flight itself is 40-50 minutes in the air — published averages cluster at 46, 47 and 49 minutes — with multiple departures daily on Lion Group (Lion Air and Wings Air), TransNusa and Citilink. But the airborne time is the smallest part of it. Add the drive to Denpasar, check-in, and the transfer at the far end, and flying is a 3-4 hour door-to-door journey. That is the same envelope as the boat.
So the rule is short. Heading to the Gilis or Senggigi, the fast boat wins outright, because flying means landing roughly 1h30 from Bangsal — the exact harbour you would otherwise have arrived at directly. The published transfers out of Praya run about IDR 250,000 to Senggigi and around 1h30 to Bangsal (quickest recorded run 54 minutes; the DAMRI bus is the cheap way and takes longer), both checked August 2026. Heading to Kuta Lombok, the south coast, or southern access to Rinjani, flying wins clearly: Praya to Kuta Lombok is 25-30 minutes and around IDR 150,000 by taxi.
The counterweights run the other direction. Boats get cancelled by weather and flights mostly do not, and boats make some people seasick. Treat every dollar figure you read on this route with suspicion — the rupiah sat near IDR 17,800 to the dollar in August 2026 while most travel pages still convert at 15,000-16,000, which is why their prices look cheaper than the counter. The number that ruins mornings is not the crossing, it is the drive. Check-in is 60 minutes before departure at both Padang Bai and Sanur, and that hour is real rather than padding. Every drive time an operator publishes is a free-flow figure and runs 40-60% short of what the road actually does at 07:30 — which is precisely when the boats leave. Plan the upper end of every range below, and fix the pickup time in your head rather than the departure time, because the pickup is what you have to be ready for. The public ferry to Lembar, and what it actually is
The third option gets mentioned in passing and never explained: the ASDP public car ferry, Padang Bai to Lembar. It is not a cheaper fast boat. It is a working vehicle ferry that runs every 60-90 minutes, 24 hours a day, takes 4-5 hours in normal conditions and 4-6 hours or more in swell, and sells tickets at the port counter only — no online booking, no reservation, you turn up and wait. Foot-passenger fares are IDR 46,000-75,000, checked August 2026; sources disagree on the exact figure because ASDP sets the tariff and revises it, so take the range as the range. Vehicles are the other reason to use it: motorbike under 500cc IDR 160,600, over 500cc IDR 313,800, car IDR 127,300.
Two things to weigh before you romanticise it. First, Lembar is in the southwest of Lombok — the wrong end again if the Gilis are the destination, meaning a long land transfer plus a local boat after a crossing that already consumed most of the day. Second, it is barebones: no facilities to speak of, and delays from swell and port congestion are routine rather than exceptional. We name it because it is a genuine 24-hour escape hatch when the fast boats have stopped for the day or for the weather, and because it is the cheapest way to move a motorbike between the islands. The weather record you should actually weigh
Here is the honest version. There is no public incident register for these operators that we would be willing to quote you, so anyone offering a confident safety statistic for the cheap boat is inventing it. What is documented is the weather, and it is enough to plan around. December to February is peak cancellation season on the Bali-Gili-Lombok crossing, and cancellations arrive in multi-day blocks rather than as single sailings. In one January 2026 event, BMKG forecast 2.5-6.0 metre waves across these routes and 72 fast boats running 80-90 trips were cancelled. The Lombok Strait is open water and considerably more swell-sensitive than the short Nusa Penida runs — this is not the same kind of crossing.
The practical reading of that. Morning crossings are smoother than afternoon ones, and the June-September windy season roughens the strait as well. A cancelled sailing is the system working correctly; the boat worth being wary of is the one that sails after the rest of the fleet has stopped. Standard operator terms are free cancellation 7 or more days out, a 50% fee inside 2-7 days, and 100% within 2 days — but weather cancellations sit outside that, with a full refund or a free reschedule to the next departure. Between December and February, build in a buffer day and never schedule a Lombok return for the same day as an international flight out of Denpasar.
One fixed date to write down: Nyepi, Monday 8 March 2027. Ferries are formally suspended, Ngurah Rai airport closes for a full 24 hours with no landings or take-offs, and nobody is permitted on the roads — which means no hotel pickup either. No Lombok transfer of any kind operates that day, and the days either side compress accordingly. Ordinary temple ceremonies also close local roads without warning year-round, which is a large part of why Bali drive times are unpredictable rather than merely long.

Take the cheaper option; we would. Two caveats before you do: ride-hail pickup at Denpasar is restricted to designated zones rather than the terminal kerb, and counter fares are negotiated rather than fixed, so the board at the counter is the only binding price — sources disagree on where in that range you will land. The arithmetic flips with numbers, bags and deadlines. Four people with luggage in a private car at $59 for the whole car beats four separate ride-hail fares, and it beats a shared shuttle that spends 40 minutes collecting other guests before it points at the harbour. Solo and travelling light on a flexible day: use Grab. Two or more people, checked bags, or a boat with a check-in deadline: book the car and stop thinking about it.
