Nyepi 2027 is on Monday 8 March 2027, according to the joint decree of three ministers on 2027 national holidays. For 24 hours the roads close and everyone stays on the grounds of their accommodation. In 2026 the airport and the ports closed as well, and the 2027 hours had not been announced by 2 November 2026. The ogoh-ogoh parades take place on the evening of Sunday 7 March. Eid al-Fitr follows two days later, on 10-11 March, so flights and boats on both sides of the closure are likely to be full.

The ogoh-ogoh parade in Bali #1
Island-wide, Sunday 7 March A loud, free evening with the whole village out

The ogoh-ogoh parade

On the evening before Nyepi, villages carry large demon figures of bamboo and paper through the streets with music and fire, and turn each figure three times at junctions. The Bali Sun's 2026 guidance was that parades typically start around 19:00, most finish by 22:00, and roads close from about 15:00 to 16:00. It listed parade points in Denpasar, Sanur, Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Jimbaran, Uluwatu, Ubud, Gianyar, Tabanan, Singaraja and Nusa Penida. The 2027 routes had not been published by 2 November 2026.

Melasti, the processions to the sea in Bali #2
Beaches, lakes and springs, in the days before Seeing a purification ritual from the roadside

Melasti, the processions to the sea

Before Nyepi, villages carry sacred temple objects in procession to the sea, a lake or a spring to be purified. In 2026 Badung police planned security for Melasti on 15-18 March in Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu and Uluwatu, and the Bali Sun warned of road closures and diversions on 16 and 17 March. Each village chooses its own day, so no 2027 dates were public on 2 November 2026. Stand back from the road and let the column pass.

The airport and the ports in Bali #3
Ngurah Rai, Padangbai, Gilimanuk, Sanur Anyone with a flight or a boat that week

The airport and the ports

In 2026 the airport closed for 24 hours from 06:00 on Nyepi, and the ferry and fast-boat ports closed earlier and reopened later. The 2027 notice had not been published on 2 November 2026, so plan for 06:00 on 8 March to 06:00 on 9 March and check again in late February. Our Nyepi guide lists the 2026 hours port by port.

Your hotel or villa in Bali #4
Wherever you sleep Two quiet nights with food and a pool on site

Your hotel or villa

Nobody checks in or out on Nyepi and everyone stays on the grounds of their accommodation, so choose a place with a garden or pool and food on site. The Bali Sun advised asking your hotel directly what it offers that day, because each one differs. Keep lights low and noise down: the village watchmen, called pecalang, patrol streets and properties.

Tuesday 9 March, the first day back in Bali #5
South Bali, Ubud and the airport Reaching a flight or restarting the trip

Tuesday 9 March, the first day back

The day after Nyepi is also collective leave before Eid, so we expect flights, boats and roads to fill. A private car with driver is from $59 per car for the day, and an airport transfer is from $15 per car. Book both early, and do not plan a tight connection on 9 March.

When is Nyepi in 2027?

Nyepi 2027 is Monday 8 March 2027. The joint decree of the ministers of religious affairs, manpower and administrative reform on 2027 holidays, signed on 15 September 2026, lists it as *Hari Suci Nyepi (Tahun Baru Saka 1949)*. If a calendar site shows another date, the decree is the one that counts.

The days around it follow from that date. The Tawur Kesanga offerings and the ogoh-ogoh parades are on Sunday 7 March, the day before Nyepi. Tuesday 9 March is Ngembak Geni, when the restrictions end. Melasti comes earlier, on dates that each village sets. Our guide to Indonesia's 2027 public holidays has the whole year.

How long does Nyepi last, and does the airport close?

Nyepi lasts 24 hours. In 2026 it ran from 06:00 on 19 March to 06:00 on 20 March, and the airport, the roads and the ports closed for it. The hours for 2027 had not been published by 2 November 2026. In 2026 the joint appeal of Bali's religious bodies came out on 6 March, so look for the 2027 one in late February. Until then, plan for 06:00 on Monday 8 March to 06:00 on Tuesday 9 March.

Our Nyepi guide covers what closes hour by hour, the 2026 flight numbers and the port times, so we do not repeat them here. This page is about the dates, the events around the day, and the calendar that makes 2027 busier than usual. Our Bali in March guide covers the weather and the rest of the month.

What happens before Nyepi: Melasti and the ogoh-ogoh parade?

Nyepi comes with a series of ceremonies, and the first two are public. Melasti is a procession from the village temple to the sea, a lake or a spring, to purify the temple's sacred objects. Tawur Kesanga is the offering made one day before Nyepi, according to Kompas TV. In the evening the villages hold the ogoh-ogoh parades, which drive away evil spirits, as the Bali Sun puts it.

Only the Nyepi date is fixed in the decree. The other days are the 2026 pattern moved to 2027, so treat their hours as a guide and confirm them with your hotel.

How does Nyepi 2027 line up with Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr 1448 is listed for Wednesday and Thursday, 10-11 March 2027, with collective leave on 9, 12 and 15 March. For employees on the national calendar that is eight days off in a row, from Monday 8 March to Monday 15 March, once the weekend of 13-14 March is counted. The decree also says that the Minister of Religious Affairs sets the dates of 1 Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha by a separate decision, so treat 10 March as final only once the minister has announced it.

The same two-day gap applied in 2026, when Nyepi fell on 19 March and Eid on 21 March. The Bali Sun reported on 20 February 2026 that the head of Bali's religious affairs office called the overlap a chance for self-control and mutual respect, and on 10 March 2026 that boats were likely to sell out around both holidays. Our own reading, not an official forecast: flights and boats will be fullest in the days either side of the closure.

For visitors this is a crowd, not a rule. Tuesday 9 March is the day the airport reopens, a collective leave day before Eid, and the first day for passengers whose flights were cancelled. In 2026 the airport cancelled 440 flights for Nyepi, as our Nyepi guide shows.

How should you plan arrival and departure around Nyepi 2027?

No flights land and no one moves on 8 March, so the plan is about the days either side. Our suggestions below use the 2026 pattern; confirm them against the 2027 announcements in February.

Your situationWhat we suggestWhy
Arriving in BaliLand by Saturday 6 March, or on Sunday 7 March at the latest and be at your accommodation by early afternoonThe Bali Sun's 2026 advice: most businesses close around midday on the eve, public transport stops around 15:00 and roads begin to close around 16:00
Going to the Gilis, Lombok or Nusa PenidaCross by midday on Sunday 7 March at the latest; our Gili fast-boat guide lists the routesIn 2026 the Bali Sun advised leaving by midday on the eve, because many ports close that evening; Nusa Penida, Lembongan and Ceningan follow the Nyepi rules
Staying through NyepiBook at least two nights across 8 March, with food and a pool on siteCheck-in and check-out are not allowed on the day
Leaving BaliAvoid a tight connection on 9 March; book a flight well after the airport reopens, or leave on 10 March or laterIn 2026 the first departure was at 08:10, and 9 March is also a pre-Eid leave day

Our airport transfer guide has drive times to the six main areas.

Can visitors watch the ogoh-ogoh parade?

Yes. The Bali Sun told visitors in 2026 that they may photograph and film parades near their accommodation, but should respect that it is a religious ceremony. The bamboo and paper figures are built by local communities, and the carriers stop at junctions to turn them three times.

The 2026 parade points were Puputan Square in Denpasar, Sanur, Kuta (Jalan Legian and Jalan Kuta), Seminyak (Jalan Oberoi and Jalan Kayu Aya), Canggu (Jalan Batu Bolong and Berawa), Seseh, Jimbaran, Uluwatu, the Ubud soccer field, Gianyar market, Tabanan town park, Singaraja, Pemuteran and Toyapakeh on Nusa Penida. Ask your hotel for the 2027 points.

There is no official start time: be in place around sunset, which is 18:37 in Denpasar on 7 March by NOAA's equations. Roads close in the afternoon, so walk from your hotel; village watchmen may move you off the street. After the parade, go back to your accommodation promptly. The honest downside is that the evening is crowded, loud and has fire, and you cannot drive anywhere once the closures start.

Do we run tours on Nyepi week?

We do not run tours or take bookings for Monday 8 March, because vehicle movement is banned for 24 hours. Saturday 6 March is a normal tour day, apart from possible Melasti road closures. On Sunday 7 March we offer a private car with a driver by the day instead of a fixed route, because processions close roads without notice; plan to be back at your hotel before the afternoon road closures.

On Tuesday 9 March the same car and driver can take you to the airport or on a full day around Ubud, the Ubud route from $65 per car, with entrance tickets of $22 per person on top. Book early, because the whole week is busy. Our guide to Grab, Gojek or a private driver compares the options and the costs.
