What is outside the door by day

The useful way to put it is this: Ubud shortens the mornings that begin in the dark, and Nusa Dua shortens the ones that begin at the airport. Both areas are covered by the same tours at the same prices, so what your address buys is not a different island. It is an hour, taken off one end of your week and added to the other.
What does an ordinary day look like in each area?
In Ubud the day takes its shape by the second morning: out early for a ridge walk or the terraces before the heat, a slow middle of the day, then dinner and something cultural within walking distance. Nusa Dua runs on a different logic. It is a managed resort strip rather than a town: the water is flat behind the reef and the sand is the most predictable white sand on mainland Bali, and almost everything you need sits inside the gates rather than out on a street. That suits a certain trip exactly - swim, breakfast, a tour, swim again - and it means dinner is a decision taken inside the hotel rather than on a walk. There is no version of Nusa Dua with rice fields on the doorstep.
Can you swim in Ubud, and how flat is Nusa Dua's water?
Ubud has no sea. That is geography rather than criticism - the town sits inland, and the water in your day is a river, a waterfall or a pool. The nearest calm swimming water is Sanur at 45-70 minutes, which is the same drive as the fast-boat harbour, so a beach day from Ubud is a day out rather than an afternoon. Nusa Dua is the straight answer to that question. The strip faces east behind reef, so the water is flat and you walk into it without reading a swell forecast. The one thing to know is the tide: Bali's spring tides move around 2-2.4 m in about six hours, and at low water the reef flat here is exposed live coral rather than sand, which makes swimming a morning-and-evening business on some days. The Ayung put-in is about 20 minutes from central Ubud, the shortest transfer to any rafting river on the island, against about 60 km and 2-2.5 hours each way from Nusa Dua, where the driving alone takes 4-5 hours out of the day; Ayung rafting is from $25 and the quad bike track sits in the same part of the island, from $39. Nusa Dua answers with the coast: the Uluwatu cliff temple is 20-40 minutes away, while from Ubud the nearest sunset temple, Tanah Lot, is 90-120 minutes.

Should you split the stay between Ubud and Nusa Dua?
For a week or more, yes, and this is the pair we set up most often, because the two halves genuinely do not overlap. Take Ubud first, while you are still waking early anyway and the inland days want early starts, then move to Nusa Dua for the second half. The order matters for one reason: it keeps the 1.5-2.5 hour run to the airport off your departure morning and leaves 15-30 minutes in its place. Under about five nights, do not split at all, because packing and a mid-trip move will cost you most of a day.
If you are staying in one and want the other, wheels close the gap more cheaply than a second hotel. Do not book Ubud if someone in the group needs the sea daily, or if the stay is three or four nights with a late flight at the end.
