Boats leave from Padang Bai on the east coast, which is already 90 minutes to 2 hours from Seminyak, Canggu or Ubud in morning traffic, and the crossing itself runs roughly 1.5-2 hours each way depending on the boat and the sea. What the Gilis do better than anywhere near Bali
The argument for going is the water, not the sights. There is no volcano here, no famous cliff, nothing to photograph from a viewpoint. What there is instead:

Is Gili Air worth visiting?
Yes — as a stay, not as a stop. Gili Air is the calmest of the three: shallow, easy swimming along the east coast, sunset on the west side, and a shoreline you can walk in well under two hours. Nothing about it is designed to be consumed in ninety minutes, which is all a day trip could ever give it. Squeezing Air into the one-day format means cutting Turtle Point or the Meno statues, and that is a bad trade in both directions.
