The airport run
Sanur is about 15 km from the terminal, most of it on the toll road over the water: 20-30 minutes off-peak, 45-60 in the evening rush. Canggu is 18-25 km through Kuta or along Sunset Road: 40-60 minutes normally, 75-90 or more at peak. After a night flight, that gap is the difference between bed and another hour of road.

Pick Sanur if you want the sea you can walk into, a flat seafront path and island days that start at a port inside your own area. Pick Canggu if surf, cafes and evenings out are the point of the trip and you accept the traffic and a drive for anything that leaves by sea. The two areas sit on opposite sides of the airport and on opposite kinds of coast. Canggu is on the west side, facing the open swell across dark volcanic sand. Sanur is on the east side, behind a reef, facing the sunrise. Neither is better. They produce different weeks, and the mistake we see most often is booking the surf coast for a swimming holiday, or the calm coast for a week of going out.
Can you swim in Canggu, and what is the water like in Sanur?
Canggu is not a swimming beach. The sand is black volcanic grit, the surf runs straight onto it, and the water is for surfing and standing in the whitewater rather than for floating about. That is exactly why the surf schools work here: sandy-bottom breaks, water at 27-29°C all year, and a beginner surf lesson from $35 at the end of your street. The west coast surf season runs April to October, with the biggest swell from June to August.
Sanur is the calm side of the south. The reef keeps the water flat and the shallows run knee-deep a long way out, which is why families with small children and older travellers keep choosing it over the west coast. It is not the clear tropical blue of the islands, and at low water the reef flat is exposed, so the swim is a morning habit more than an all-day one. What does the Sanur port do to every island day?
This is the decision, and it is the part most area comparisons skip. Every fast boat to Nusa Penida leaves from Sanur port, a jetty terminal since 2022 with 20-22 sailings a day to Penida and around 17 to Lembongan, the first at 07:00-07:30. From most Sanur hotels that is a walk or a few minutes in a car. From Canggu it is 60-90 minutes of driving, close to two hours in the 07:00-09:00 harbour rush, and the shortcut lanes out of Canggu clog soon after sunrise. The evening is the second payment. The crossing is 30-45 minutes either way and the last boat back leaves Penida at 17:00, which puts a Sanur guest a few minutes from dinner and a Canggu guest into the 16:00-19:00 traffic for the drive home. One Penida day inside a surf week is a fair trade; three sea days from Canggu means most of a day spent in a car. Which one has the easier airport run?
Sanur, clearly. It is about 15 km from the terminal, most of it on the Bali Mandara toll road over the water: 20-30 minutes in light traffic, 45-60 if you land into the evening rush, and 20-25 at 02:00 when the toll gates are empty. Canggu is 18-25 km on the other side of the airport, through Kuta or along Sunset Road: 40-60 minutes normally and 75-90 or more at peak, with the 16:00-19:00 window the worst of it. A pre-booked airport transfer is from $15 per car to either area.
The fares follow the same shape. In a May 2026 in-app check Grab quoted IDR 148,000 to Sanur and 185,000 to Canggu, and the official counter sells both at roughly IDR 250,000-400,000. The airport matters twice for Sanur guests, because the last widely bookable boat to Penida leaves 15:15-15:30: land after 14:00 and you sleep in Sanur and cross in the morning. What is daily life like in Canggu and in Sanur?

Restaurants sit along one road, Jalan Danau Tamblingan, which crawls at dinner time and goes quiet not long after. The crowd skews older and more family-heavy, and the noise level drops by a whole grade. Whether that reads as restful or as slow depends on what you wanted from the evenings, and it is worth being honest with yourself before you book.
Which area is better placed for Mount Batur, Ubud and the east coast?
Direction decides this one. Sanur sits on the east side, so everything east and inland is shorter: Mount Batur is 1.5-2 hours with a sunrise pickup at 01:30-02:00, Ubud is about 45-75 minutes, and Padang Bai, the harbour behind the Blue Lagoon snorkelling cove, is 60-75 minutes up the coast. From Canggu the same volcano is 1.5-2.5 hours with a 01:30 pickup, Ubud is 29 km that takes 1-1.5 hours and up to two at peak, and Padang Bai is 2-2.5 hours away. The volcano morning from each base is in Sanur to Mount Batur and Canggu to Mount Batur.
Canggu wins the west. Tanah Lot is about 13 km and 30-50 minutes away, closer to Canggu than to any other main area, and the west-coast beaches and beach clubs are already where you sleep. For an inland week of waterfalls, temples and rice terraces the gap between the two bases closes, and a private car with driver from $59 per car absorbs the distance from either one. It is the sea days, timed by a boat rather than by you, where the two bases stop being equal.
Who should book which?
Canggu suits surfers at any level who want the water at the end of the street, remote workers, anyone who wants to meet people without trying, and travellers whose evenings matter as much as their days. The trade is real: the traffic follows you home, the beach is not for swimming, and every island day starts with 60-90 minutes of road and ends with the same drive back.
Sanur suits families with small children, daily swimmers, older travellers, anyone who will not ride a scooter, and anyone with two or more sea days planned, whether that is Penida, Lembongan or the direct morning boats to the Gilis. Can you get to the Gili Islands from Sanur?
Yes. Three direct morning boats leave Sanur between 08:45 and 09:30, cross in 3h to 3h45 and cost IDR 345,000-460,000 one way. From Canggu the Gilis are an overnight trip rather than a day out: 4h30-5h30 door to door via Serangan or Padang Bai, with the drive to a harbour before any boat.
