The turn. Some mornings are indistinguishable from October, others are grey and choppy, and the difference shows up a day or two ahead rather than a month. Sumbawa is drier than Bali overall, so the wet season there tends to be less relentless than the one you left behind. Go if the rest of your trip already puts you east, and keep a spare morning.

The sharks are still at the platforms — the crews still fish. What drops is the odds of getting out to them. This is when a morning gets called off for weather, when the water goes green, and when a delayed ferry or flight eats the one day you had. If these are your only dates, book with a buffer day and treat the boat as a maybe.

The tail of the rain. Conditions improve unevenly through the month and the bay is quiet, so a good March morning can feel like you have the place to yourself. It is still a gamble rather than a plan. If you have the flexibility to move your boat day by 24 hours, March rewards it more than any other month on this list.
Why the sharks are there in every month
Saleh Bay is a wide, sheltered bay on the north side of Sumbawa, and it is dotted with bagan — stilted bamboo and timber fishing platforms with lift nets, anchored out in open water. The crews fish through the night for small baitfish, and the whale sharks worked out long ago that the nets are an easy meal. The animals are following the fishing, not a migration route or a seasonal bloom passing through. Because the bagan work all year, the sharks are around all year, which is why nobody here quotes an opening and closing date.
That also shapes the morning. This is a fixed-point encounter: the boat runs to whichever platform the crews have radioed in, and you get in the water beside it. No searching, no chasing, no spotter plane. The trade-off is that a bad morning goes wrong for a different reason than you would expect — not because the animals moved on, but because the crossing was too rough to make, or because that particular platform had a quiet night. What the calendar changes, and what it doesn't
Once you accept that the sharks are a constant, the month you pick is doing five specific jobs. Only one of them has anything to do with the animals.
- Sea state on the crossing. You leave in the dark and cross open water. Dry-season mornings are usually flat; wet-season mornings can be a rolling, grey slog before you have had coffee.
- Water clarity. Wetter months push more runoff and plankton into the bay. The shark is three metres from you either way, but the photo behind it is greener.
- The journey east. Rain affects the drive to the bay and the ferry legs more than it affects the swim. Most lost days are lost on land or on a jetty.
- Cancellations. A crew that will not go out is a crew making the right call. This is a real risk in January and February and close to a non-issue in July and August.
- Cost and availability. July and August are peak across Indonesia — flights and rooms east go early. September and October give you the same sea with fewer people chasing it.
- Not the sharks themselves. No month on the calendar empties Saleh Bay, and no operator can promise you a sighting in any of them.

Getting to Saleh Bay from Bali, and why it takes days
Sumbawa is two islands east of Bali. You either fly out of Denpasar to Lombok or Bima and drive from there, or you take the ferry chain across Lombok and on to Sumbawa. Either version eats most of a day in each direction. Why the boat leaves in the dark
The pre-dawn start is not for atmosphere. The bagan crews finish hauling their nets at first light, which is when the baitfish and the sharks are concentrated around the platform, and the bay is at its flattest before the day's wind builds.
