Bali Surf Lesson for Beginners — From $35

Kuta is the closest base to the airport and the easiest place in Bali to learn to surf, and both of those shape its day trips. The terminal is 15-30 minutes away, the lessons happen on the sand in front of the hotels, and Sanur port, where every Nusa Penida boat leaves, is about 15 km across the airport corridor, 30-50 minutes by car. The Uluwatu cliffs are 45-60 minutes normally and 90 or more after 15:00, Tanah Lot 60-100 minutes, Ubud 1-1.5 hours off-peak, and the Mount Batur sunrise collects at about 01:30. Below is every tour we run from Kuta and Legian with its pickup time, drive and price.

Uluwatu temple and the Bukit in Bali #3
Bukit, 45-60 min, 90+ after 15:00 A dedicated afternoon with a car

Uluwatu temple and the Bukit

The cliffs are close in kilometres and slow in the afternoon, so from Kuta they are their own half day rather than an add-on. A private car with driver from $59 per car covers the temple, a Bukit beach and the sunset. Kuta or Uluwatu compares the two bases.

Mount Batur at sunrise in Bali #4
Kintamani, 1.5-2.5 h An early night and a clear morning

Mount Batur at sunrise

From Kuta the drive is 1.5-2.5 hours and the driver knocks at around 01:30. The jeep is $60 with hotel pickup, $70 with the hot springs, and the hike is from $35.

Rafting the Ayung in Bali #6
Kedewatan, about 1.5 h A river day with the afternoon back

Rafting the Ayung

Kuta comes in at roughly 1.5 hours to the Ayung, a little shorter than Seminyak or Canggu. Rafting is from $25 with gear and hotel pickup, about two hours on the water; the numbers by area are in our rafting guide.

Which tours pick up from Kuta?

All of the ones in the table below. Kuta and Legian are in the standard pickup area of our day tours. The base's advantages are the airport and the beach: the terminal is 15-30 minutes away, the surf lessons are on your doorstep, and the boats to Nusa Penida are a short run across the airport corridor. The comparisons with the neighbours are in Kuta or Sanur and Seminyak to Kuta.

Prices are either per car or per person. The car tours, Ubud, UNESCO, east Bali, Tanah Lot and Bedugul, and the private car, are priced per vehicle for up to five, with entrance tickets per person on top where the route has them; the west Nusa Penida tour is per car for up to six. Surf lessons, rafting, the Batur formats and the manta and cruise trips are per person.

Pickup times and prices from our tour pages, September 2026. Drive times are the planning ranges published in our route guides; the 07:00-09:00 and 16:00-19:00 traffic adds to them.

The surf and the boats

The beach is the reason most people stay in Kuta. The strip breaks over sand, which makes it the right place for a first lesson rather than the famous reefs: a private beginner lesson is 2-4 hours from $35 with board and coach, and the instructor picks the tide window. Our beginner surf spots guide explains why the south end of Kuta is the gentlest start.

The boats are the other quick win. Every Nusa Penida fast boat leaves from Sanur, about 15 km from Kuta across the airport corridor and 30-50 minutes by car, then 30-45 minutes on the water. The west tour is from $49 per car for up to six, and the manta trip from $29 per person, $46 with the return boat.

The Bukit, Ubud and the volcano

Uluwatu is close on the map and slow in the afternoon: 45-60 minutes normally and 90 or more after 15:00 as the rush onto the Bukit builds. From Kuta the cliffs are one dedicated afternoon with a car and driver from $59 per car; for a sunset without the Bukit traffic, Tanah Lot is 60-100 minutes the other way. Our Tanah Lot or Uluwatu sunset guide compares the two.

Inland, Ubud is 1-1.5 hours off-peak and up to 2.5 hours in traffic, so the Ubud route from $65 per car is a long day; leave before 07:00 or after 19:00 and the drive shrinks. Mount Batur is 1.5-2.5 hours out and the driver knocks at around 01:30; the jeep at $60 with pickup lets you sleep both legs.

What we would not book from Kuta

A Gili day trip. The short crossing leaves from Padang Bai, a long morning drive from the Kuta belt, and the direct boats from Sanur take 3h to 3h45 each way. If the islands matter, stay a night; our Gili Islands fast boat guide compares the harbours.

And Uluwatu squeezed into the end of another day. The climb onto the Bukit after 15:00 is the slowest drive in the south; give the cliffs their own afternoon, or take Tanah Lot for the sunset instead.
